Need more Garlic!!!

I thought "Salem's Lot" was scary - this is much worse!!

The basic premise is a vampire starting a huge army and taking everyone in LA out. As is usual with a McCammon book, there are quite a few characters you get to know along the way and you really fear for them! Two particular scenarios scared the pants off me - a lone doctor checking on 'comatosed' patients and the priest trying to make a human chain of survivors reach the church for safety.

Relive Eighties horror

The kind of story that worked twenty or thirty years ago in a Salems lot, Stand kind of a way, and when you listen now it's all so familiar it's almost a cliche. But you can blame the 'passage' for moving things on and leaving stories like this a little creaky. Still, I enjoyed it in an innocent way.

This was my first McCammon book, but a real find. A fast-moving visceral horror story, brilliantly written, with wonderfully developed central characters. Very dark but also offering hope. Also excellently performed by Ray Porter, who is one of the best performers I think I have heard on audible. Recommend!

A gripping vampire yarn

I loved the story! These beasts are truly horrific, not romanticised. The narration is superb, the man of a thousand accents!! A well deserved 5 stars!

A decent vampire yarn.

I've read a lot of vampire stories, the thing that makes this one stand out is the setting of Los Angeles. The story is not the most original in the world and the character of Cobra is built up so much, then go's no where, really. The ending is pretty good, the scale of it is enjoyable. I've read better vampire books, but I've also read a lot worse. The performance was excellent, as always by Ray Porter.

Decent Vampire Yarn

It was just OK.
Story was long and drawn out with the last chapters in particular adding little to the overall story. The narrator was actually very good and did his best to keep the characters interesting which wasn't easy with so many accents involved. If you're looking for a Vampire story you could certainly do worse (and better!).

Absolutely loved it, Twilight on acid!!!! *****

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, it is fast paced and exciting! Set way before mobile phones and the internet which, I found, made it more interesting. If you like the supernatural genre you’ll love this!! It’s like Twilight for adults!! Narration also superb. I will now be downloading more by this author.

Hold's up pretty well.

I first read this when it came out and found it to be excellent at the time, so after 40 years I thought I'd have another read and I still found it to be worth the time. Funnily enough, there were things I thought I remembered but upon reading it again I found I had been mistaken. It really is worth a read though.
