Summary

When Catherine learns that she is dying, she remembers the words her husband once jokingly uttered and decides to leave him the ultimate posthumous gift: a time capsule containing photographs of their life together along with tape recordings in which she recounts every secret she ever kept, every unspoken thought whether loving or treacherous - the things they never said.

Catherine's recordings shake up many of Sean's beliefs, sometimes enraging him and other times soothing with memories of the many joys that make up a life together. But even as the tapes provide an emotional roller coaster of surprises, Sean prays that they'll confirm the one thing he always secretly believed but never dared say out loud: that destiny exists; that their life together was not the result of mere chance.

What a clever and compelling idea for a story.

I really enjoyed this novel, it was particularly good as it was brought to vivid life by the brilliant reading. The many characters were portrayed with authentic voices. The device of the box of tapes retelling the moments from a long relationship worked well.

Tearful ending

The narrator's voice really brought this book to life, if that's the right way of putting it, given the subject matter. Makes one consider their own mortality . . . and ending

Loving and Soothing

The characters are relatable and real and you can really feel what they're going through. At some point everyone loses someone incredibly important to them and I like how this story deals with the situation. It made me think that although for the most part, Sean and Katherine should have talked more, maybe there were some things that could have been left out. That being said they probably helped the grieving process. It's a good story and well told.

Narrator tried too hard

I found the narration of male voices cringe worthy. Female sections were fine but I almost gave up at the beginning as the male voices were so bad.
The story had promise, The premise of someone leaving tapes of things they never said and nobody really knowing another person could have worked really well. However I couldn’t believe that someone who claimed to love the other person so much could drop such bombshells especially after telling them to only listen to one a week.

Hmmmmm

I really don't know what to write. it seemed the letters were just giving him bad news after bad news...to the point I really didn't LIKE Katherine.. not the greatest book... but worth a listen I suppose...

Good story idea, poor performance

I liked the story idea and was really looking forward to listening, but it was really annoying the way the days ended without a break. As the voice wasn’t different from Sean s and the recording, I found it difficult to keep up. A chapter number might have helped.
