Summary

Things in Jars is an enchanting Victorian detective novel that explores what it is to be human in inhumane times, from Costa Award winner and twice BBC Radio 2 Book Club author Jess Kidd.

London, 1863. Bridie Devine, the finest female detective of her age, is taking on her toughest case yet. Reeling from her last job and with her reputation in tatters, a remarkable puzzle has come her way. Christabel Berwick has been kidnapped. But Christabel is no ordinary child. She is not supposed to exist.

As Bridie fights to recover the stolen child she enters a world of fanatical anatomists, crooked surgeons and mercenary showmen. Anomalies are in fashion, curiosities are the thing and fortunes are won and lost in the name of entertainment. The public love a spectacle, and Christabel may well prove the most remarkable spectacle London has ever seen.

Fabulous but...

absolutely loved this book but the narration was poor, next time I'll read it myself!

Charming

A charming bit of nonsense, nicely written and beautifully read. Just the thing for a wet weekend.

Another enjoyable book from Jess Kidd

My second Jess Kidd listen, and a shift in era but just as enjoyable a story as 'The Hoarder'. Jess Kidd allows the supernatural to play a perfectly unintrusive and credible part to the tale, and brilliantly rich characters throughout.

Enjoyable and entertaining

A very enjoyable read, with a disturbing story mixed with comeback value. Fairly predictable but likeable characters and a well read piece.

So good I read it twice!

Beautifully written with superb narration that brought the book to life. I’d love to read more about Bridie Divine. The descriptive nature of this authors writing is captivating.
Funny, sad and just a lovely story.

Clever and fun

This was an immensely enjoyable book - funny, intelligent, dark, Gothic and intriguing to the last. And beautifully narrated. Absolutely loved it.

A very different read

I finished this book 4 days ago and I'm still not quite sure what I think about it. The narration was excellent and I did love the story but I'm not sure it wasn't slightly too quirky even for me and there are a couple of major loose ends still hanging. I'll definitely listen to another one if it becomes a series but I just don't know what I think about it. Maybe you should listen and see what you think too?

Great pseudo Victorian gothic detective novel

A bit over wordy, but great fun. Plucky Victorian heroine, dastardly evil-doers and a more than unusual kidnap victim to be rescued.
Shame about the narrator... someone more skilled at vernacular accents would have made it even more enjoyable.
