About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Using musical examples from Bach to the Beatles, Levitin reveals the role of music in human evolution, shows how our musical preferences begin to form even before we are born and explains why music can offer such an emotional experience.

Music is an obsession at the heart of human nature, even more fundamental to our species than language. In This Is Your Brain on Music Levitin offers nothing less than a new way to understand it and its role in human life.

Ok but not as much musical content as II thought

My boss recommended this for years ( the book) and I only managed to start reading it before I left the company. So when I saw the audio book on here I thought that’s a write and easy way. I don’t know quite what I was expecting but maybe I thought it would unlock something magical in my brain or understand music theory better. I still really enjoy Daniel and support him. Thanks

Inspiring book with lots of interesting references

I absorbed all the interesting outcomes of research that has been done on how music affects the brain.

Too long. Not for me

i'm usually always pleased with my purchases.
i think the author made a great effort to vulgarise scientific knowledge, while presenting all the different hypothesis.
As a result, it seemed to me I had to listen to a lot before the author would simply share his understanding.
i finished the book, but I kind of had to force myself, and it decreased my appetite for audio books until I finished it.
The reading performance was also a bit boring. Half journalistic, half fake excitement.

A great look at neuroscience

A great look at neuroscience through the lense of music. You'll learn more about the brain than music, but if that's what you're here for great. Well read, easy to listen to. Published in 2006 however so some parts of the neuroscience could be slightly updated. A 2nd ed. perhaps?

Music Cerebral Feast

Great survey of music it's processes and how the brain processes complex sounds and with an intriguing exploration into the evolution of music in humans and other species.
