About this listen
Remember Tickle Me Elmo - that joyful fun giggle fest that became a pop cultural phenomenon? I’m a lucky guy - one of the two toy inventors who came up with it (my collaborator Greg Hyman, the other).
Toy inventor - a pretty wild gig. Wow, who wouldn’t want to sit around all day coming up with ideas for toys? The roots of this cool way to make a living were planted when I was only two. Playing pinball taught me my first word: “nickel”. That earliest memory of “play” is first in this series of 151 vignettes.
Each of these vivid episodes from ages two to 21 shaped the playful grown-up I became. It’s a fairly typical American childhood. I’m betting that reading my stories of play, work, love, sex, friends, scares, scars, etc., will help you recall memories of your own life as a kid. As you think back about those experiences, I’m also betting you will remember the joy of play and the joy of life.
