About this listen

Tilly Trotter has devotedly served Mark Sopwith at Highfield Manor for twelve years. She is his wife in all but name. Theirs is a scandalous yet happy arrangement. But when Mark dies, Tilly is left pregnant with his illegitimate child. Cast out of the manor house by Mark's spiteful grown-up daughter, Tilly is forced to face the prejudices of the local village. No stranger to hardship, she makes do as best she can, but when a villager's vicious attack leaves her baby son, Willy, half blinded, she knows that it is time to leave her native Tyneside. A new love seems to offer an escape and so she follows her heart to America, sure that this will be the beginning of a better life. But new perils await Tilly across the ocean...

Captivating, heart rending stories both book 1 and book 2

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to both books about the life and lives of Tilly Trotter both in England and America and look forward to listening to the third book when released of this trilogy.
I would definitely recommend these books by the talented author Catherine Cookson.

What’s happened to the accent?!?

Why is Tilly suddenly speaking like a southerner?!? The accent was amazing in the first book… what a shame… doesn’t feel like the same character at all. It keeps changing back and forth. Did the narrator forgets?! I’m now constantly listening for the accent being wrong. Or changing back. It’s ruined this book unfortunately.

too sad and melancholic

not as good good as the first tilly trotter. Anne Dover finds her range of accents challenged in this story, which is what I usually love listening to her narrations. Story was pretty sad and lifeless for me. having said that I will be kite ing to the 3rd book! so it wasn't that bad eh!

Who on earth writes a book with someone that has a stutter read these books at night to relax and go to sleep was just lucky. I didn’t throw my phone out of the window. I’ve had pretty much all of her books, but this one just playing no
