About this listen

A dead ship returns to the Deep Dark with a live crew.

Captain Ishmael Wang finally gets the Chernyakova out of the yard and embarks on a voyage into the Toe-Holds where the Confederated Planets Joint Committee on Trade has no authority. Where the law is whatever you say it is as long as you can enforce it.

Where he learns that some will do anything to hide their secrets and everybody has a secret.

Continuing ishmeal tale

Love this author, this narrator and the main characters in this continuing story. The main entirely human main character gives a flavour of an entirely honourable and vulnerable man overcoming the continuing adversity hitting him. The story continues and engages. Highly recommended.

Secrets and Lies in Space

When Ishmael is given the dubious opportunity to sail the stars again he is reluctant at first, given that the ship is The Chernyakova it is understandable.

It's been a couple of years since Ish brought it in as salvage but the ghosts and the memories are still as fresh as the day he first stepped foot on it.

But Pip has given him the chance to hunt down the man who killed the woman he loved and he is going to grasp it.

To do this they have to enter toe-hold space, areas of space that are off the beaten track and more than a little Wild West.

Ish makes his way through a new world with a new crew and new experiences.

Another great listen and entry into Nathan Lowells Golden Age of the Solar Clipper series.

Jumping in (s)pace

I loved the first Solar Clipper novels with their mix of space theatre, domestic detail and likeable characters. To Fire Called has a good mix of these elements but there are jumps in pacing and storyline that make it more challenging as an audio experience. In my ears, Audio narrative needs to carry the reader on a tide of story. I don’t want to realise that something has possibly been foreshadowed or implied two chapters (or more) before so that hunting around and back tracking is needed in order to ‘get’ the plot. The last few chapters in To Fire Called included a couple of major jumps that left me dissatisfied - can I be bothered to find out how a character has returned, why the story refers to an unexpected location and why threads are left unresolved? Probably not.

Love this series

If you're looking for an all action sci-fi, then perhaps this series is not for you. However, it is one of those series that reels you in and, once hooked, you have just got to carry on.

Hopefully, the next instalment will not be too long in the coming.
