About this listen

Catch a professional assassin: top priority. Find a failure-to-appear and collect big bucks: top score. How she'll pull it all off: top secret.

Trenton, New Jersey's favorite used-car dealer, Jimmy Poletti, was caught selling a lot more than used cars out of his dealerships. Now he's out on bail and has missed his date in court, and bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is looking to bring him in. Leads are quickly turning into dead ends, and all too frequently into dead bodies. Even Joe Morelli, the city's hottest cop, is struggling to find a clue to the suspected killer's whereabouts.

These are desperate times, and they call for desperate measures. So Stephanie is going to have to do something she really doesn't want to do: protect former hospital security guard and general pain in her behind Randy Briggs. Briggs was picking up quick cash as Poletti's bookkeeper and knows all his boss' dirty secrets. Now Briggs is next on Poletti's list of people to put six feet under. To top things off, Ranger - resident security expert and Stephanie's greatest temptation - has been the target of an assassination plot. He's dodged the bullet this time, but if Ranger wants to survive the next attempt on his life, he'll have to enlist Stephanie's help and reveal a bit more of his mysterious past.

Death threats, highly trained assassins, highly untrained assassins, and Stark Street being overrun by a pack of feral Chihuahuas are all in a day's work for Stephanie Plum. The real challenge is dealing with her Grandma Mazur's wild bucket list. A boob job and getting revenge on Joe Morelli's Grandma Bella can barely hold a candle to what's number one on the list - but that's top secret.

Got it all wrong!

Listened to top secret whilst poorly, constantly laughing is normally good for you, so why does my head hurt? Twists and turns almost lost me, but Lula sleeping in the rust bucket whilst it was stripped was too funny by far. Now for Twenty Two...

Excellent for car journey

This Stephanie Plum novel is brought to life by the brilliant narration!
I bought it to pass the time while me and husband drove the 4 hours to Glasgow. It was funny and made the journey pass much quicker.

Decently Read - entertaining

I maintain that Lorelie King is a decent performer but not as good as CJ Critt who read the Recorded Books versions. I recall the author interview at the end of High Five when she did all the characters asking Evanovich questions like when Stephanie would settle down. However King doesn't do a bad job overall, though I don't like Grandma Mazzer being played with a wild western accent.

They story itself is exactly what you might expect from a Stephanie Plum novel. However being formulaic does not preclude entertaining. All the usual characters are there. Morrelli vs Ranger contesting for Stephanie's affections. Lulah thinking about food and dressing in lycra.

The McGuffin this time is a Russian hit man interspersed with sub-plots involving bond absconders. As always some suspension of belief is required. Would the US government be really not intervene early if Stephanie and Ranger intrude on their enquiries. Ranger seems to have developed unlimited resources over the books.

All in all, it is an easy listen.

Lorelei King is indeed King.

I used to read these books, but now only listen as Lorelei King is a fantastic narrator. The story is almost a byproduct of the performance. Easy to listen to, fun to imagine and outrageously non-PC in many ways.

pretty predictable

I listen to these doing housework etc, they've never been any great literary pieces, but this was below par even for this series. Just more of the same.....
