Summary

Audiobook three of the Cadian series

The second book of the Minka Lesk story arc follows on from the story started in Cadian Honour.

Listen to it because

The Cadian 101st, led by Minka Lesk, is taking the fight to the traitors on Malouri. Will their faith and pride keep them fighting or will the meat-grinder siege break them down?

Description

Cadia, 10,000 years a stalwart bastion against Chaos, is broken. Its collapse at the hands of Abaddon and the Thirteenth Black Crusade has fractured the Imperium of Man, and in its wake spreads the seeds of heresy, lies and insurrection. It falls to Cadia’s survivors to fight on, bloodied but unyielding, in the name of the Emperor.

On the world of Malouri, traitorous forces have retreated to the impregnable island fortress of Crannog Mons. After years of stalemate warfare, the task of breaking the siege is given to Minka Lesk and the Cadian 101st, who find themselves fighting a meat-grinder mission that threatens to devour them. In the midst of slaughter, sacrifice and brutal attrition, a question must be answered: what does it mean to be Cadian in a galaxy without Cadia?

Written by Justin D Hill. Audiobook narrated by Colleen Prandergast.

Excellent and compelling listen

A really good narrative, well executed with the sort of in depth military details that let you lose yourself in the story. It is the third book in the series, but stands on its own well enough - in fact, it's a great introduction to the Imperial Guard's way of warfare. Not just the callousness, incompetence, inhumanity - but also the bravery, audacity and courage. I would have liked to see more redeeming features in the Allied Imperial Guard units, which are portrayed as bumbling incompetents or feral savages, and they feel like "straw men" sometimes and lack a bit of depth. But they're not the main antagonists of the story, and it doesn't detract from the gripping pace of the narrative. The parallels with D-Day were nicely done. At first it felt like they'd be too heavy handed (when the plan was outlined), but in execution the details take you out of history and into the 41st Millennium. An excellent book, particularly noteworthy for its ability to stand alone and be enjoyed without any background knowledge of the Warhammer universe.

felt like filler

Was ok, but character development was spread a bit to thin, needed to concentrate on a few details arcs and then have the foreshadowing.

Better than the previous book.

Better than the previous book by a country mile. it was actually a decent story. I feel the narrator was better this time round.

You can’t keep a good Cadian down…

This is a visceral, vivid account of the battle for Traitor Rock. A lot of old favourites are involved again, but the real draw of this story is, of course, Minka Lesk.

As always, Justin D Hill paints a picture of life in battle which you can see unfolding before your very eyes. He doesn’t just include the gore - he shows us tactics, feuds between leaders, and the mental cost of survival and injury. Absolutely engrossing.

We need more Minka Lesk and the Cadians!

I am really loving these Imperial Guard novels, more so than the Space Marine ones. I've been going through the audio books of Gaunt's Ghost (1-6) , Ciaphas Cain (1-5) and now the Cadian Series. Justin did a great job with the writing, Cadian still lives.Colleen Prandergast did a smashing job with the narration and voice acting. I do hope GW do commissions more Cadian novels, I'd love to see Minka and co visit the Phalanx where a load of Cadians are now calling home.

Surprisingly good

Although I don’t why I should be, I really enjoyed this, hopefully there will be more of the Cadian 101st but with BL who knows

What happened?

This series was enjoyable up until now, this story played out so differently, it all felt extremely cliche, I can't exactly put my finger on it..

Great to hear a warhammer story from the humble AM trooper.

It's great to hear a story from the perspective of just a Baseline trooper. This book continues the story of the cadians after the fall of cadia. Rather than the traditional warfare that you get from most AM books this time. Instead of a slow drawn outside , it's far more of a fast paced action led Story. It involves covert teams daring missions but also basic things like getting to the front line and the delivery of superheavy's really interesting element of the logistics you don't normally get to hear. lesk is a great lead.
