About this listen

Transformation and Acceptance is about two brothers. Josh, a gay HIV-positive man who needs a kidney transplant, and his brother Ben, a homophobic father who has a son that may be gay. Both Ben and his son are matches for the kidney transplant.

Not only does the novel lead up to who will be the donor, but a revelation by the son will put into question acceptance and transformation by both Josh and Ben.

Five Stars

Transformation and Acceptance is a nuanced and engaging story about identity, relationships, and resilience. Josh, the protagonist, is someone you can’t help but root for as he faces challenges with determination and heart. While the book explores serious topics like family, religious identity, HIV, death, and homophobia, it doesn’t feel overly heavy, striking a balance that keeps the story hopeful and engaging. I’d actually say it’s upbeat and uplifting in a way.

Josh’s relationships with Ed and Phillip were complex and deeply moving. Ben, while not the easiest character to relate to, is written with such realism that you can’t dismiss him. And Clint, though introduced later, plays an important and memorable role in the story. The theme of transformation and acceptance is present throughout, with multiple characters embodying it in their own unique ways.

The narrator is fantastic, bringing the characters to life with distinct voices and real personality, adding depth to an already rich story.

My one criticism is that the prologue chapter is a bit of a time jump from the first chapter, so I’d actually recommend skipping it and starting with Chapter 1. I think the first chapter hooks you enough that you don’t need the conflict introduced in the prologue to motivate you to keep listening.

Transformation and Acceptance is a thoughtful, heartfelt book that stays with you. It’s an honest look at human growth and connection, and it’s absolutely worth a listen.
