Summary

It’s the height of summer in Las Vegas. Everyone believes the serial killer Seven of Spades is dead - except Levi Abrams and Dominic Russo - and it’s back to business as usual. For Levi, that means investigating a suspicious overdose at the Mirage that looks like the work of a high-class call girl, while Dominic pursues a tough internship with a local private investigator. The one bright spot for both of them is their blossoming relationship.

But things aren’t so simple. Soon, Levi is sucked into a dangerous web of secrets and lies, even as his obsession with the Seven of Spades intensifies. Dominic knows that Levi isn’t crazy. He knows the Seven of Spades is still out there, and he’ll do anything to prove it. But Dominic has his own demons to battle, and he may be fighting a losing war.

One thing is certain: the Seven of Spades holds all the cards. It won’t be long before they show their hand.

This author never disappoints!

This purchase was a no-brainer. Kingsbridge is one of my favourite authors with their realistic characterisation and myriad of cultural backgrounds to all characters. I was not disappointed and can't wait for the next one!! If you want a book where the characters are real and diverse and the story is rich, completely above and beyond the standard m/m romance then you have to read this.

So Entertaining!

Everything was executed so well so that this, folks, was very entertaining! Case investigations were interesting and the idea of trick rollers was novel to me. The slice of life scenes were genuine with one almost moving me to tears. The new characters were drawn so well with the bored AF Leila Rashid being a favourite and a returning character, Carlos, had a deftly written reveal! I saluted Ms. Kingsbridge because a single court scene not only effectively recapped Book 1, enticingly set up Book 3, but also showcased Levi and Dominic's characters and their deepening emotional connection. Perfection!

Wyatt Baker narrates everything with the same gravitas and seriousness. Therefore, his strength is not in conveying emotional beats or the lightness in lighthearted exchanges or the sensuality in intimate moments or the adrenaline highs of physical altercations! The good news is that his narration steers clear of being flat and his pacing does not feel monotonous because WB has a certain something that keeps the experience enjoyable. Plus, I just love, love, love his Dominic. l can and do appreciate Mr. Baker’s performance here.

A little confusing

I'm not as enamoured or Invested in this series as i'd expected. It took an hour and a half into the audiobook for me to remember which characters/ plotline this was-as there are so many books that are similar. The main murder mystery was confusing and the book only perked up in the last ten minutes. The narrator is good, but sounds a little robotic at times. I'm undecided if I will continue with this series when the next book comes out.
