Summary
Money makes the world go round for Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge - and when there isn't enough of it, the world just has to spin a bit faster.
Ever on the lookout for a quick buck, a solid gold fortune, or at least a plausible little scrounge, the irrepressible Ukridge gives con men a bad name. Looking like an animated blob of mustard in his bright yellow raincoat, he invests time, passion and energy (but seldom actual cash) in a series of increasingly bizarre money-making schemes. Finance for a dog college? It's yours. Shares in an accident syndicate? Easily arranged. Promoting a kind-hearted heavyweight boxer? A snip.
Poor Corky Corcoran, Ukridge's old school chum and confidant, trails through these pages in the ebullient wake of Wodehouse's most disreputable but endearing hero and hopes to escape with his shirt at least.

An Overlooked Gem
Narrator: Jonathan Cecil is the definitive interpreter of the work of Wodehouse. Accept no substitutes! He squeezes every atom of humour from the prose, and, from lines that might otherwise earn an amused twitch at the corner of the mouth, regularly sends me into fits of uncontrollable giggles.
Story: Ukridge is one of the lesser known characters, perhaps, but not for want of merit. This endearing oaf first earned a place in my heart halfway into the first chapter of Love Among the Chickens, and has lodged there ever since.
Memorable moment:
"I ain't fightin' at no Oddfellows' Hall," he replied. "Not at no Oddfellows' Hall, nor nowhere else I'm not fighting, not tonight nor no night." He pondered stolidly, and then, as if coming to the conclusion that his last sentence could be improved by the addition of a negative, added "No!"

Classic Wodehouse from the 1920's
So much more to PG Wodehouse than Jeeves and Wooster. Ukridge is a selection of short stories which stand together as some of the characters appear in multiple stories eg Battling Bilson . I will definitely listen to more Wodehouse, brilliantly read by the narrator.

The elements are all there - but not the complexity of later novels. Great fun though.

Great fun
This is early Wodehouse, but the master is getting well into his stride for his later masterpieces. Ukridge has the irrepressible optimism and inventiveness of a loveable Wodehouse rogue; he is a supremely imaginative and supremely incompetent entrepreneur (or unlucky if you take his viewpoint), always taking the 'broad vision', not trifling with details, always in search of capital. It would be interesting to see him on 'Dragon's Den'! The book is a series of short stories about his various mishaps and adventures as told by his long suffering pal Corky, and is full of affectionate and daft humour.
Jonathan Cecil narrates it all superbly and his perfect pacing allows you to savour the utter perfection of Wodehouse's prose, and he brings the characters splendidly to life. This is quite an old recording, so sound quality is not all that it might be, but you soon get used to it.
Great fun.

Some great chuckle out loud moments
The performance was excellent , and the story bobs along nicely .
Preferred love amongst the chickens but still a good light hearted yarn .

An irritating character
Wood house does his best with an annoying character which I found difficult to accept. His usual characters are much more entertaining.
