About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Kenton's career as a journalist depends on his facility with languages, his knowledge of European politics and his quick judgement. Where his judgement sometimes fails him, however, is in his personal life. When he travels to Nuremberg to investigate a story about a top-level meeting of Nazi officials, he inadvertently finds himself on a train bound for Austria after a bad night of gambling. Stranded with no money, Kenton jumps at the chance to earn a fee helping a refugee smuggle securities across the border. Yet he soon discovers that the documents he holds have far more than cash value - and that they could cost him his life ...

Uncommon Danger

Classic noir thriller set in 1930s Europe.
A pacey thriller with spies, assassins, and our unlikely hero journalist. A well written novel, with a good central plot and believable circumstances.

The blueprint for THE spy novel

There is a well spoken, military trained thug called Major ‘Corkie’ Corcoran in Le Carre’s spy thriller The Night Manager. This unpleasant but fascinating monster appears several decades earlier in this Ambler classic as Captain Mailler. In both cases the characters are sidekicks to the real villains but both every bit as vital to the plot. Just a small example of the influence Ambler had on Le Carre and just about every good spy writer since from Ian Fleming to Brian Fremantle and Gavin Lyall to Mick Herron and beyond. Ambler is the daddy and the master of all.
Uncommon Danger follows a similar format to many of Ambler’s other novels set in the brutal chaos of Eastern Europe on the brink of world war 2. The misfit loner pitched into unfamiliar territory and emerging as a hero with hidden resources.
But these stories have so much more. Woven into the narrative is a deep and detailed understanding of the geo politics of Europe as it was shaped by the rise of Hitler and his fascist minions as they crawled all over the continent preparing for invasion. With the gift of hindsight we can see just how on the money ambler was. He wrote about what was about to engulf Europe and the world. He predicted the future. His words are as terrifyingly apt today as they were then.
This is a novel of exciting bare knuckle action and erudite, sophisticated analysis and all beautifully written.
The ending is by todays standards arguably lame and an anti climax but that is irrelevant. It’s the journey that matters and the detail which delights and overwhelms along the way.

Yet another fantastic thriller

This is my third audiobook by Eric Ambler and once again I found myself completely involved with the characters and story. Set just before the war you can feel the tension in europe as you listen. As before it's a very ordinary main character in extraordinary situations and it works well because of it. The narration is perfection.

Predictable but fun

Some of the villains were a little cliched. But period atmosphere and twists were fun.
