About this listen
An adventure story set in the Solomon Islands sees Jack and Toni, childhood schoolmates, set out on a routine boat trip to a neighbouring island, but things go awry when they discover, due to an oversight by Toni, that they do not have enough fuel to make the journey and are stranded at sea. At first they are optimistic that they will be rescued within hours, but as the first days draw to an end they slowly begin to realise that the mistake has left them in serious jeopardy and they can see no end but their own demise in sight.
Based on a true story, as the days lengthen at sea, we are gifted with a vision of the beauty of the Solomon Islands and the environmental debt it is owed by the world, after decades of over-fishing, logging and now rising sea levels due to global warming.
At the heart, this is a crucial and important novel on climate change, culture and human relations.

surprisingly enjoyable
I chose this audio book because it sounded interesting, to be honest I wasn't expecting much. How wrong I was. The story was enchanting, read with expression and warmth and I was swept along on a journey which kept me enthralled to the very end. A simple narrative which serves to remind us of what is really important in life, love, friendship and being the best that you can.

Gripping, with a great tale of friendship & hope
Great book. It transforms you to a land far away, whilst it highlights questions about the environment and how we use the earths resources, in a non preaching way! I was reluctant at first, as I thought it would be all about climate change & making me feel bad about my lifestyle, but it was a deeper book about friendship, and the ups and downs of it, whilst being set on a beautiful island, which also can be terrifying.

I LOVED this book.
An extraordinary feat of traditional storytelling, this book manages to unfold multiple layers of the characters and their experiences - exploring themes of community, tradition and the effects of ruinous commercial exploitation of natural resources on such communities and traditions. I found the way this was revealed to be poignant in its very directness and written from the heart. Everything from the sights, sounds and smells of this unique region to the story itself and the way it was read was worthwhile and I would warmly recommend this book.
