Summary

Set under the brooding skies of North Norfolk. Meet Sara Hirst as she searches for her lost father and finds that great beauty sometimes conceals great violence.

Detective Sara Hirst has moved from London to Norfolk Police's Serious Crimes Unit. She wants to know the truth about her father, who has connections to the area. Her mother won't tell her the real story.

A new job. A new place. Same old problems.

Sara's first call-out is to a decomposing body discovered in a ditch on a local farm. How does the murder relate to a recent spate of thefts? Who wanted the victim dead?

Then the case grows very personal....

Contains mature themes.

A good listen

The story was somewhat predictable but nevertheless enjoyable it did make me gasp sometimes especially with the woman. Coming from Norfolk unfortunately the underlying racism is all too true. The reader hasn’t got some of the Norfolk dialect quite right ( some especially Agnes sounded more American) but at least it wasn’t the West Country accent which often happens.

Definitely worth a listen

I really liked this novel , good plot. narration was good but some of the accents sounded like the characters were from South Africa and New Zealand , maybe that's just me?
Going to buy the next novel now

Brilliant Detective Fiction

it is a brilliant story - well written, well plotted and gripping. I'm going to be reading the whole series! Sadly let down by the performer who, though she has a lovely voice and engaging manner, can't sustain accents or voices, meaning that the characters get confused. Do persevere though - it would be sad to miss out on a great read because of that.

Shockingly poor Norfolk accents.

The story is good and describes Norfolk really well.

Unfortunately, although the reader has a lovely reading voice she is shockingly poor at a Norfolk accent. I wish she’d taken enough pride in her work to learn how to do it properly. That said, it’s incredibly hard to find any actor capable of anything even close to a Norfolk accent.

I wish this reader hadn’t bothered even trying because she sometimes made it sound Eastern European and sometimes a bit Irish. Then she mainly fell in to thet extremely lazy habit of confusing Norfolk with the West Country.

One tip. Stop pronouncing “arrrr” It’s “aah”. “I” is “oi” not “ay or eye” “oh” is “ooh”

Very good first book of series

I always use Audible, I like to read in bed, I have problem sleeping so I can listen to a book while my husband sleeps and don’t have to keep, light on. I know the 2nd book is on Audible but the 3rd isn’t very disappointing. I have loved this book and the Narrator is very good. I shall buy the 2nd and hope the others will go to Audible eventually.

Good Story

Easy listen with good plot line, I think certain personal discoveries could have been strung out over at least 3 books to keep me wanting to read the next books.

Great story, well read. Highly recommended.

I loved this novel, and enjoyed the performance too, although the narrator did seem to struggle a little at first with the Norfolk accent.
The characters and plot kept me full engaged throughout.
Highly recommended!

Terrible narration,

Difficult at times to keep up as accents were so poor, confusing. Narrator sounded Australian/New Zealand but trying to do various English accents.

Struggled

Narration is awful, kept preserving but have now given up. No pause when changing to different scenes.

Accents were certainly not norfolk!
