About this listen

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole. She was crowned Queen of the Red Court and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the boy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly appealing Morpheus. Now all she has to do is graduate high school.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn't show up at school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland - where she (partly) belongs.

Could she leave Jeb and her parents behind again, for the sake of a man she knows has manipulated her before? Will her mother and Jeb trust her to do what's right? Listeners will swoon over the satisfying return to Howard's bold, sensual reimagining of Carroll's classic.

Enjoyed the sexy romance but issues still existed

What I really like about this book and the series in general is the way it builds angst and sexy romance encounters. It reminds me of those YA novels I loved to read when I was a teen (and still do) since it's cheesy.
I'm happy Alyssa found her voice and finally stoop up against Morpheus's grooming and Jeb's gaslighting but the fact that these microagressions still exist are enough for me to second-guess the purpose of the story.

This book also misinterpreted mental health and I generally feel that the author ticks the wrong boxes but some pivotal plot points are unexpected enough to keep you reading.

The external stakes in this book were OK but I still feel like the heroine is your average teen fantasy with two very toxic men hitting on her all the time.

The narration is pretty good.

A great listen

I love this series of stories, and think they are a fantastic take on old classics. I really like the characters, and find it really hard to stop listening once I start. Would recommend.

Great story, dreadful narration

I enjoyed this story, it’s just a pity the narrator can’t do the British accent at all -it sounds like a bizarre mix of American and Australian. Such a shame, as Morpheus’ cockney accent is such a big part of who he is. For this reason, I’ve spent most of the time reading the physical book instead of listening to the audio version!
