Summary
Meet the forensic pathologist, Dr Richard Shepherd, in the true crime book of the year - brought to you by Penguin.
'The dead do not hide the truth and they never lie. Through me the dead can speak....'
He solves the mysteries of unexplained or sudden death.
He has performed over 23,000 autopsies, including investigating some of the most high-profile cases of recent times; the Hungerford Massacre, the Princess Diana inquiry, and 9/11.
He has faced serial killers, natural disasters, 'perfect murders' and freak accidents.
His evidence has put killers behind bars, freed the innocent and turned open-and-shut cases on their heads.
Yet all this has come at a huge personal cost.
Written and narrated by Dr Richard Shepherd, Unnatural Causes tells the story of not only the cases and bodies that have haunted him the most, but also how to live a life steeped in death.
Critic reviews
"Puts the reader at his elbow as he wields the scalpel." (Guardian)
"Fascinating, gruesome yet engrossing." (Richard and Judy, Daily Express)
"Fascinating, insightful, candid, compassionate." (Obersver)

Bringing life to death
Really loved this book. I've always found the idea of forensic pathology fascinating. This was not only an excellent insight into the work, and touched on lots of high profile cases, but had personal stories describing the impact of such a career on the mental health of the pathologist. Was also very insightful on the changes in the profession over time, and the influence of public perceptions and trends in thinking. Great that it was naratted by the author too, adding additional personal touches. Highly recommend.

A brilliant book
What a fantastic book. A well read first hand account of the details of so many of the tragic events and accidents that have happened around the world from as far back as the hungerford massacre to princess Diana and 9/11 This book has none of the grandstanding that comes via the usual media accounts. This man has managed to keep his integrity and honesty in tact in the face of intense pressure from the legal profession, police, media & the families of the deceased. It must be horrendous to have to be right 100% of the time and to know that one mistake means your career is over or that someone is jailed or not incorrectly. The fact that after many years of absorbing the stuff that would send the rest of us running for cover caused him to suffer PTSD shows that he and his profession deserve our upmost respect and compassion. I couldn’t put this book down it was fascinating.

fabulous
The testament of a great book is one that stays with you long after it has been finished. This book is one of them. It is also an emotional roller coaster, that will sometimes leave you both shocked, horrified and drained. Richard Shepherd seeming invincible patience, honesty and deprecation shines through. He allows us not just to see his life work but his very life and all the ups and downs and twists and turns. When you finish the last page you will almost certainly want to meet the author and say " thank you".

Brilliant and moving
Definitely worth a listen/read. I found this very moving and thought provoking. What a career Dr Shepherd has had and I only wonder how he lasted so long before it all caught up with him. Thank you for sharing.
