About this listen
A Horus Heresy character novel.
Constantin Valdor is the chief of the Emperor's Custodian Guard and is among the closest of His companions. As the wars of Unity come to their end, Constantin faces his greatest challenge, as dark deeds are required to pave Mankind's road to the stars.
Listen to It Because:
Delve into the era of the Unification Wars and discover Constantin Valdor's role in bringing about the Imperium of Mankind in an unmissable novel by Chris Wraight!
The Story:
Constantin Valdor. It is a name that brings forth images of heroism, honour and peerless duty. For it is he who commands the will of the Legio Custodes that most esteemed and dedicated cadre of elite warriors. He is the Emperor’s sword, His shield, His banner and he knows no equal. Clad in shining auramite, his fist clenched around the haft of his Guardian Spear, he is the bulwark against all enemies of the throne, within or without. Nearing the end of the wars of Unity, Valdor’s courage and purpose is put to the test as never before. The petty warlords and tyrants of Old Earth have been all but vanquished, and the Emperor’s armies are triumphant. What now for the nascent Imperium and what fate for its forgotten soldiers, its Thunder Warriors and armies of Unity? A new force is rising, one which shall eclipse all others and open the way to the stars. But change on Terra is seldom bloodless, and for progress to be ensured darker deeds are necessary.
Written by Chris Wraight. Narrated by Steven Pacey, Jonathon Keeble, Katy Maw and Toby Longworth.

Nice
Not bad but quite a short story. Enjoyable but not a deep story should have been half a credit not one.

It’s a decent book.
It’s a enjoyable book giving some insight into events before the great crusade. However for a book carrying Valdors name in the title I would of liked to see him feature a lot more instead the book focuses on several other characters. It’s definitely worth a listen but it’s not a page turner. Like so many Horus Heresy books it’s a one off filler but a reasonable one at least. Just should have been given a different title so we can get a story truly featuring Valdor.

Great book, Chris Wraight can always be trusted.
Fleshed out the unification wars as well as Valdors back story and personality. The human characters are a tad annoying and unnecessary. Would've been better to focus on Astartes and the technician. I enjoyed the audio drama aspect of the interviews with Valdor. They were a nice touch.

Surprising gem
Chris Wraight, along w ADB and Dan Abnet are probably the holy trinity of warhammer writers. I had avoided this because not massive fan of Valdor....in reality it is an origin story covering everything from the gene craft of the Primachs, thunderwarriors and all that other interesting stuff

great story and adds more to the lore !!
Chris Wraight is the god father of custodes, the book gives a deeper insight into Valdor and his motivations and the lengths that the legio custodes will go to in order to enact the emperor's will and bring forth the imperium, if your look for lore on Thunder warriors, the 1st legion and the start of the imperium this is it, I'd also highly recommend Chris Wraights other custodes books watchers of the throne and regents shadow, both amazing reading for custodes fans.
