Summary

Since being widowed, Caroline Dering has been content to live her life solely for her children. Then the mysterious Robert Shepperton arrives in the village. At first, Caroline's gentle heart is simply touched by his obvious unhappiness; until gradually she finds her sympathy turning into love. But the visit of her lovely younger sister, Harriet, to Vittoria Cottage, throws Caroline into a turmoil - because Harriet also falls for Mr. Shepperton....

It was not until now, when she thought she had lost Robert, that Caroline discovered how much he meant to her.... But with her beloved, glamorous sister Harriet evidently winning his friendship and admiration, what can be done....?

Peaceful, quaint and trivial

It took me a while to work out what era this is set in, and it didn't feel quite right for the time when I realised. It's meant to depict village life in a time that had stayed behind as the world moved on, but ... maybe I'm wrong. It's a simple, obvious story, and if you're in the mood for a cozy listen this might hit the spot. I thought it ended a bit abruptly, but, as I say, the story is obvious so it didn't really matter. Three to four stars.

Disappointing

I enjoyed reading this book many years ago and was looking forward to listening to the Audible version but am finding Lesley Mackie's voice harsh and grating and it is ruining the book for me. I have persevered to chapter 4 hoping it would improve but can no longer continue listening. Very disappointed.

The performance spoiled a much loved book for me

I found Lesley Mackie's voice harsh sharp edged and grating to the extent that I cannot finish listening to the book. I have a paperback of the book which I have greatly enjoyed in the past and hooped for the same from the Audible version however it was not to be
