Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Chloe Pirrie, Sam Woolf, Michael Fox, Olivia Darnley and Terence Wilton.

At a glittering society party in St Petersburg in 1805, conversations are dominated by the prospect of war. Terror swiftly engulfs the country as Napoleon's army marches on Russia and the lives of three young people are changed forever. The stories of quixotic Pierre, cynical Andrey and impetuous Natasha interweave with a huge cast, from aristocrats and peasants, to soldiers and Napoleon himself.

In War and Peace (1868-69), Tolstoy entwines grand themes - conflict and love, birth and death, free will and fate - with unforgettable scenes of 19th-century Russia, to create a magnificent epic of human life in all its imperfection and grandeur.

Outstanding, war, politics overall, a love story!

I have wanted to read this for ages, audible has made it possible! The actual book is just to heavy for me to hold. Thank you!
I liked the different narrators, yes one sometimes repeated himself but that didn’t bother me, it made more real, I would repeat lines if I was reading it.
I love the characters, Pierre in particular, seeing how he grew and developed through his life experiences and becoming a better person. The war narrative was long at times but an essential part of the story.
I thought once I finished I wouldn’t listen again just due to the length but I will, it deserves more attention. An epic love story!
I was surprised how modern the language used felt at times.
Highly recommend.

I’m a little stunned….

Listening to War & Peace has been an extraordinary, life-strengthening experience. It is far more than a book.

How to ruin a good book

I've read War & Peace many times. The gripping narrative never fails to capture the inherent idiocy and randomness of war, love, life and death. That said, the disconcerting changes of narrator in this version take away most, if not all the pleasure of this text. It downloads in 6 different parts (not all at once) of which none are numbered, so it's impossible to see at a glance which part follows on. Frustrating as this is the changes in narration are discordant and immensely irritating; not only do emphases change, but differing pronunciations and odd phrasing make listening less of a pleasure and more, a series of winces.

loved it !

I absolutely loved it , in a lot of chapters of the book I felt as if I was at ball, drinking party or an in depth discussion between friends.
its true , you end up loving all of the characters for their faults and strengths.
would recomend this version.

con: half way through one of the men reading is coughing and often repeating himself.

A Great Novel. A Great Read.

Absolutely amazing piece of writing and the narrators were wonderful in their performances to bring the novel to life

justly regarded as one of the greatest of novels

astonishing insight into human nature, social interaction, and historical causation, set against the grandest of canvases.

It’s an achievement to read this one!

Even better to do half reading and half listening on here I’d say. Highly recommend this one.

Great book but some problems with the audio file

Really great and engaging book. Thought provoking.
the audio did have issues however, where it kept stopping despite being downloaded onto my device.

I was enjoying it

As the title says, great until the narrator changed, not sure why anyone would think that was a good idea.
