Summary

Audiobook two of the Chronicles of Uriel Ventris

The Great Devourer is descending on the world of Tarsis Ultra, but to defeat the xenos horrors, Captain Uriel Ventris may have to embark upon a dangerous and unorthodox mission.

Listen to it because: it's a classic tale of the Space Marines against tyranids...with a twist. Conventional tactics fail, the Ultramarines way of war is insufficient...but if he uses other means to win the war, Uriel Ventris may lose far more.

The story: the Ultramarines are the epitome of a Space Marine Chapter. Warriors without peer, their name is a byword for discipline and honour, and their heroic deeds are legendary. The Great Devourer is descending on the world of Tarsis Ultra, a world under the protection of the Ultramarines. Captain Uriel Ventris and his warriors - allied with their barbaric cousins from the Mortifactors Chapter - rally the forces of the planet to defend against the tyranids. But to defeat the xenos horrors, Uriel may have to turn his back on the Ultramarines' teachings and embark upon a dangerous and unorthodox mission.

This edition also includes the prequel short story 'Leviathan', which sees Ventris and his Ultramarines board a space hulk an encounter the vanguard of the hive fleets: the feared genestealers.

Written by Graham McNeill. Running time 10 hours six minutes. Narrated by Bruce Mackinnon.

poor editing

Great story but terrible editing, sound drops off every so often with very poorly edited parts

Great story. Terrible narrator.

It is clear that there were many edits in the narration as the difference in sound from the original recording and the retakes sound very different. It ruins the performance and the book should be redone with a better narrator.

Great "Space Marine" story through and through

A thoroughly enjoyable listen and embodies the iconic large scale fight-to-the-last that you expect from 40k. Though I felt this could have spent more time in development. Throughout the mission to fire the orbital defense laser I was wondering "why are we doing this?". Felt like we were padding out the novel before the endgame. I think it should have just been presented differently, as one of many strikes against the Tyranids.

The vocal performance also seemed rushed. there were many places especially towards the end, where you could hear that a single sentence or phrase was recorded in a different studio and editted in. As always though, Bruce nailed the male characters voices.

Would definitely listen to it again.

a good story spoiled but the wrong narrator

i gave a 5 but i do feel almost any other of the known warhammer narrators would have been far better for this series of books

Fantastic second installment

Second book just as thrilling as the first Ureil Ventris and the Ultramarines, can't wait for the third installment.

Revenge is certainly served cold

Great story and Performance, only complaint is that the audio changes quality frequently which can be jarring. Other than that I loved exploring another Planet and even other Successor Chapters of the Ultrama.

Marmite

You either love these bolter porn books or hate them and after listening to three or four I am still undecided, I actually wanted more of the other characters such as snow or pavel and definitely I wanted more Mortifactors storyline but it just reverted to Uriel being Uriel albeit he did don his Deathwing armour, Bruce has got better as a narrator but can’t capture the listener with this materiel

Good story…average narration

An enjoyable story but I struggled with the choice of narrator for this book (and series). It really could have done with someone of the ilk of John Banks or Andrew Wincott, they have the tone and voices spot on for space marine novels.

The narrator sounds a bit too much like the late Rik Mayall, and once I had that in my head it continually broke my immersion in the story as I couldn’t shake the thought that Captain Flashheart was reading to me.

Odd audio to a great second installment

Narration seems to jump from clear and close to further away, a bit strange sadly

Good but.

The narration kept changing and was a little distracting and took you out of the story.
