Summary

The hilarious and controversial host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher has written his funniest, most opinionated, and most necessary book ever—a brilliantly astute and acerbically funny vivisection of American life, politics, and culture.

Some of the smartest commentary about what’s happening in America is coming from a comedian—this comedian being Bill Maher. If you want to understand what’s wrong with this country, it turns out that one of the best informed and most thought-provoking analysts is this very funny pothead.

The book was inspired by the “editorial” Bill delivers at the end of each episode of Real Time. These editorials are direct-to-camera sermons about culture, politics, and what’s happening in the world. To put this book together, Maher reviewed more than a decade of his editorials, rewriting, reimagining, and updating them, and adding new material to speak exactly to the moment we’re in. Free speech, cops, drugs, race, religion, the generations, cancel culture, the parties, the media, show biz, romance, health—Maher covers it all. The result is a hugely entertaining work of commentary about American culture in the tradition of Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and H. L. Mencken.

Best of Bill Maher

Funny, Witty and the only central voice out there that says at it is! Timeless commentary of society and politics.

He’s got soooo many good points

It was a great listen!
He (and his writing team from the show) make a lot of thought provoking points about all issues, big or small.

Hilarious, candid, timely

This book is Maher at his best. As a long-term viewer of Real Time, I consider Maher one of the most significant voices in American culture at the moment & one of the most important champions of the free circulation of ideas. I do not agree with him on everything but he always makes his case powerfully and memorably. What is so good about this book is that he holds the MAGA cult to the fire constantly, never forgetting that they pose more of an existential threat to democracy than the Democrats and the far-Left.

Reality and Humour.

A great combination of commentary on modern society mixed with first class comedy. A modern day George Carlin!

Best Comedian around... unless you're a woke Trumper

Absolute genius from the greatest comedian to come out of America since Bill Hicks.

We need more Maher audio books in the world.

His More Recent Material

There are some excellent commentaries on here, divided by themes like "Health", "Trump", and "Civil War". While I appreciated those, I felt it should've covered a longer span of time. Real Time has been running since 2003 but most of these are from the last few years; probably to keep it relevant, but given the central thesis was to reflect on how he has evolved over the years, it might've been more interesting to delve back into the Bush and Obama years more.
