Summary

Kathy Reichs meets Fragile Lives in this fascinating and compelling memoir from the UK's most eminent forensic scientist and some of the most fascinating criminal investigations she has worked on.

'Finding the right answers is what forensic science is all about. What often matters even more, however, is asking the right questions.'

Never before has criminal justice rested so heavily on scientific evidence. With ever-more sophisticated and powerful techniques at their disposal, forensic scientists have an unprecedented ability to help solve even the most complex cases.

Angela Gallop has been a forensic scientist for over 40 years. After joining the Forensic Science Service, the first crime scene she attended was for a case involving the Yorkshire Ripper. As well as working on a wide range of cases in many countries around the world, she is now the most sought-after forensic scientist in the UK, where she has helped solve numerous high-profile cases, including the investigation that finally absolved the Cardiff Three, the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path murders and the killings of Stephen Lawrence, Damilola Taylor, Rachel Nickell and Roberto Calvi.

From the crime scene to the courtroom, When the Dogs Don't Bark is the remarkable story of a life spent searching for the truth.

Boring!

I found this so dull. It felt unconnected and uninteresting. Stuck it out but it was painful!

Not what I was expecting

Thought provoking, entertaining, informative, and tragic in equal measures. I wasn't expecting to be inspired by this book but the achievements written about in such a humble way, yet with such pride was quite an aspiration. Not sure about the weird music at the beginning and end of the narrative though...

A fascinating subject; dry & boring presentation

I have a huge interest in forensic science & all related subjects. Goodness me, this was dry!
If there's any humour or interesting observations in this book, it wasnt evident in the narration (very well-spoken woman).
I zoned out & didnt even get a third of the wsy through. I returned it & refunded. A shame.

Narrator spoiled it

This is an interesting book, however the narrator spoiled it a bit for me as she constantly swallows and you can hear her lips smacking and clearly gets very dry reading the book. It was a little off putting but the book is interesting nonetheless.

At times engaging but sometimes infuriating

This book is engaging. The author is obviously a very intelligent and dedicated forensic scientist but story telling is not one of her strong suits. There are vignettes of fascinating aspects of forensics but infuriatingly certain chapters end with things like "I can't remember the outcome of the case" or "but other things were to come into play that changed everything". Not enough detail is given to the reader to research the cases themselves and sometimes the "other things" that came into play are never referenced again within the book. There is also a very annoying habit throughout the book of the author referencing cases that are yet to come. For example, in chapter 26 the Damilola Taylor case is mentioned numerous times but this case is not discussed until Chapter 27. Perhaps the editor was out sick that day. This haphazard approach to detail and continuity does little to underscore what the book's main point is: that detail is everything. The last four chapters are interesting; an insight into the more business-oriented aspects of the author's career - I liked these chapters as there was great detail in them and it's interesting to get an insight into the business mind of this accomplished scientist. I wish the other chapters had this much focus and detail.

worrying

I returned the audiobook after the constant reference to Jamie Bulger. if we are relying on her accuracy for our freedom. it's worrying she can't get his name right.

Great book

Really interesting topic that put a new spin on Forensics - the real life versus tv life. Let’s hope some of her fears about cuts do not come true.

Angela has lived a fascinating life and seen the worst of what humans can do to each other but also helped save the lives of people wrongly accused.

Well worth a listen

Attention to detail! An eye opener

I nearly ditched this book because I wanted to hear more of the author’s actual cases. But I became enthralled by the development over time of forensic science in the UK from an expert. She explained chronologically how the science has evolved and how more recent discoveries and advances in science, has created even more sensitive tests that can solve cold cases, free innocent/imprison someone who thought they got away with it. I am blown away by how much dna/fibres etc can be extracted IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO LOOK! I love the idea of the scientists recreating scenarios in the lab so that they knew where to look. It really is truly incredible and not enough credit is given to this science.
I am also frustrated by the thought that if there isn’t the money/knowledge/sheer bloody mindedness to solve a crime, that police may not utilise these incredible experts as they should.
This is an excellent book.
I know who I will be calling if ever I get convicted of a crime I didn’t do
I wish I had known about these kind of career choices when I was at school. This is fascinating.
