A little soporific, but as a bedtime story, good.

As with all MacLean, rather slow. Good narrator. Ending is a little soporific. All in all a good bedtime story.

Classic film, classic book

If memory serves, the book was kind of written as the film was in production. It wasn't a book first, but written as a film.
The film is an institution, a must watch. This book has all the key elements of the film but is expanded to make it more book-like. But nothing detracts from a cracking piece of adventure and espionage.
The book does make Smith younger than the version we see in Richard Burton, but all the classic plot points and lines still work.

The performance of the narrator is perfectly suited to the story and delivers everything almost as you remember in the film. Not sure how much the film influenced the narrator or if its just me memories of the film filling in gaps. But its such a classic film you can't help but be affected by it.

A great story

Unlike Ice Station Zebra the film is very similar to the book and I could hear Richard Burton’s voice in my head as I listened to this story. It is well voiced and left me wanting more.

A ice cold thriller

Would you listen to Where Eagles Dare again? Why?

Yes. Because of Oliver`s performance. It is just pure gold. He gets the atmosphere just tight.

Film v novel

I was a big fan of the book and the film when I was a teenager, so I thought I would see if I still liked it many years later. While the plot is very far fetched it’s not worse than most thrillers. However the main premise I realised was very odd, which was about British agents working for the Germans. There is no basis for this in fact and there is no real internal logic for their motivation in the book. However given when it was written it works better as an allegory for the Cold War. There is a rather jokey tone between the main protagonists which was a surprise which was not so evident in the film. Overall I would still happily watch the film. Not so much the book.

Good Fun

Very enjoyable. A huge fan of the film, I found the book equally good fun. A difficult story to narrate, and the accents were a little weak, and dated. However this did not distract too much from the excellent plot.

Not quite right

Story is great but not sure the narrator got the tone right for me. Too much tongue in cheek humour which didn't jump out to me when I read the book.

Exciting.

A known story but was curious, and it did not disapoint,,, I am a fan of the narrator, and his voice adds depth to the story, an exciting listen.
