Summary

#1 New York Times Bestseller

A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life - until the unthinkable happens.

Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Celeste Ng, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

I wish I could discover this for the first time over and over

What can I say? I am a writer and editor and have probably read close to a thousand books in my life. I can honestly say this might be my favourite of them all. Definitely in my top three. I loved this from start to finish, the story is wonderful and the narrator fantastic. If you only read one book this year, this should be it.

Where The Crawdads Sing

Where The Crawdads Sing is the story of Kya, a young girl who is abandoned by her family and left to fend for herself. Already on the outskirts of the community, in more than just her location, she rarely ventures out of the marshes and spends her days learning about the habitat around her. When she does let the outside world in, she learns that it can be both scarier and more accepting than she could ever have imagined.
The lyrical and descriptive writing made this a very easy book to listen to and get lost in. The descriptions of the marshes were so in depth I was almost transported there.
I did feel it was a little bit slow to start, but once it picked up, I really didn't want to put it down.

Brilliant

This is possibly my favourite book to date. A book that brought tears to my eyes. The bigotry and preconceptions of an individual or section of society that is portrayed here fuels your emotions. Aside from that, the story is beautifully written and performed and spans across years of the heroine's life. You will be filled with hope and sorrow (mainly sorrow) as you follow the life of Kya, the Marsh Girl. But it is a story of hope and how a person can develop and survive through the harshest of circumstances.

A must read.

Beautiful novel. Part murder-mystery, part coming-of-age novel.

Painfully beautiful novel that is at once a murder mystery, a coming-of-age narrative and a celebration of nature. I didn’t want this book to end. I can’t even express how much I love this book!!

She has a way of describing nature that captures the imagination just so. A gorgeous bittersweet tale.

Amazing Audio book

Very well written, lovely narration. I loved this book which was recommended by Reese’s Book club- I read earlier reviews that said they thought there was too much description regarding the Marshes etc but I felt the descriptions were extremely relevant to the story

Absolutely brilliant

I loved this book from start to finish. I felt completely immersed in the story. My heart ached for Kya and my tears flowed. The narrator was excellent & every character felt different. I had to Google a few words, namely what Crawdads & Palmetto's were lol. I know the movie is coming out in 2022 and I really look forward to watching it with my daughters.
