Summary

Inspired by the McMartin preschool trials and the Satanic Panic of the ’80s, the critically acclaimed author of The Remaking delivers another pulse-pounding, true-crime-based horror novel.

Richard doesn’t have a past. For him, there is only the present: a new marriage to Tamara, a first chance at fatherhood to her son, Elijah, and a quiet but pleasant life as an art teacher at Elijah’s elementary school in Danvers, Virginia. Then the body of a rabbit, ritualistically murdered, appears on the school grounds with a birthday card for Richard tucked beneath it. Richard doesn’t have a birthday - but Sean does....

Sean is a five-year-old boy who has just moved to Greenfield, Virginia, with his mother. Like most mothers of the 1980s, she’s worried about bills, childcare, putting food on the table...and an encroaching threat to American life that can take the face of anyone: a politician, a friendly neighbor, or even a teacher. When Sean’s school sends a letter to the parents revealing that Sean’s favorite teacher is under investigation, a white lie from Sean lights a fire that engulfs the entire nation - and Sean and his mother are left holding the match.

Now, 30 years later, someone is here to remind Richard that they remember what Sean did. And though Sean doesn’t exist anymore, someone needs to pay the price for his lies.

Surprisingly good

I often give up on stories like this. They never quite get it right. Or the story is good but I don't enjoy the way it's read.

Give this one a go. It's got a few twists. Keeps you listening, and it's read well.

wow, what a book

What happens when one tosses a stone in to a pond? Does it skim for a moment or tow or does it sink? There are ripples that flow outwards from where the stone finally lands, after the initial splash anyway. that, essentially is this book with the pond being life and the tone being the lies while the ripples radiating out from it are thee effects of one simple lie told to please an adult because a child thinks it’s what she wants to hear. it’s an incredible book. Only one thing and it’s a small thing. The song Shaun and his mother were singing at the start? They couldn’t have. The song was not released until 1984 and this was apparently this was 1982 so that part s wrong but, it’s a small thing easily enough corrected with just a bit of fact checking.

Deeply moving and disturbing

Ever wonder what a modern day Salem Witch trial might be like? Well, this is it. The tale gradually unfolds and it is disturbing on a number of levels. It's very good. Dark, funny, sickening, sweet, complex and simple. It is all of these things.

Very interesting read

Loved everything about it. Great narrator.
This left me feeling a lot of things; sympathy and anger towards the 'victim'. I still don't know how I feel about him and the lies he told and the lives he destroyed.
