Summary

AN INFANTRYMAN'S UNVARNISHED TRUTH ABOUT MODERN WARFARE

The fight for the "White School" during Operation MEDUSA in Afghanistan was the fiercest combat the Canadian Army had seen since the Korean War. Chief Warrant Officer John G. Barnes was in the thick of it as the Company Sergeant Major of Charles Company, 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment.

Barnes's extremely frank and highly detailed memoir is a fast-paced tale of courage, loss, and eventual redemption that feels like someone telling you their story across the kitchen table. Above all else, this book tells the unvarnished truth of the modern-day veteran experience from a senior non-commissioned officer's point of view.

Extraordinary listen.....excellent

While not from a military family and being a 68 Yr old American female, my dad worked as a civilian engineer at Eglin AFB early in the Vietnam days (and we then lived in the area of Patrick AFB)
so, seeing Green Berets and F-105's and B-52's was normal and it created my own link to being a civilian family member...followed by years of my life deeply entwined with Vietnam Vets and so much of what they lived thru and with.
John's story is engrossing and like his friends, I listened in 2 sessions, only to sleep in-between. The insight and honest emotions, along with
living the life of a soldier, furthered my deep compassion, respect and understanding of men and women I was blessed to know...even in the saddest of connections.
The narrator could have been John himself...excellent listen.
Thanks for sharing your life so openly and for all you gave, John...you are a special man.
