Summary

Not all magicians go to schools of magic.

Adam Binder has the Sight. It’s a power that runs in his bloodline: the ability to see beyond this world and into another, a realm of magic populated by elves, gnomes, and spirits of every kind. But for much of Adam’s life, that power has been a curse, hindering friendships, worrying his backwoods family, and fueling his abusive father’s rage.

Years after his brother, Bobby, had him committed to a psych ward, Adam is ready to come to grips with who he is, to live his life on his terms, to find love, and maybe even use his magic to do some good. Hoping to track down his missing father, Adam follows a trail of cursed artifacts to Denver, only to discover that an ancient and horrifying spirit has taken possession of Bobby’s wife.

It isn’t long before Adam becomes the spirit’s next target. To survive the confrontation, save his sister-in-law, and learn the truth about his father, Adam will have to risk bargaining with very dangerous beings...including his first love.

Great book, particularly considering it was free

Suffering withdrawal from the excellent Kevin Hearne (Iron Druid Chronicles & superb Plague of Giants) and also the action packed Harry Dresden files (inimitable Jim Butcher) I needed a fix.
I chanced upon this book and gave it a whirl (because it's free and I'm like that), and was happy I did. Although not as full of action as I'm used to, the plot was well thought out and characters fully realised.
I would definitely include David R. Slayton books in future based on this story.

I think it's more difficult to know if the book was improved by the very good narration, or if the narration was made easier by the book. Perhaps the two just complement each other, as they're both of good quality.

Nice to have a gay love triangle for a change

Great story. Lots going on but not too much. The reader is perfect for the character.

Urban fantasy

I am all caught up with Dresden and Verus and needed the next engaging urban fantasy fix. This hits the spot! Great narration, need the next book please!!!

Had potential but could have been better.

Several times I felt confused with the story, maybe because the writing and the world-building were sometimes confusing. The book had a lot of potential though. It would have needed more lenght (some elements were quite glossed over) and to explore some elements deeper and I would have liked it more I think.
The second half had a soft love triangle. I say soft because it didn’t feel like “on your face”. I don’t like love triangle (it’s one of those tropes where I’m like “Thank you, next!) and I managed to bear this one. I could have easily pretended there wasn’t one and it would have been the same. It felt a bit superfluous.
The narrator also did a good job!

ok but...

Interesting premise of a less than affluent family and their black sheep magical son. Performance was excellent, it's not badly written, but the protagonists are a little difficult to engage with and I found my attention wandering. I found the repeated focus on relationships a little adolescent. I probably won't read any more in the series. It's a bit too "Twilight" for my taste.

not that good a read.

annoyingly bad written, performance makes it barrable.
filled with plot holes and wierd plot turns. won't let you forget for one second that the main character is gay. also the main character is awfully inexperienced in all ways and can't fathom that there are some that lives in a different way than himself.

Best free book I've found on audible

A very enjoyable book. Great story and characters. The family problems are ground and real. Making the fantasy elements more grounded and yet fantastical. Best young adult book I've read since I was a kid reading Harry Potter

I got bored with the love story

The fantasy story is very good, the narration is good. I got very bored with the sappy love story, he seems to go on forever, I found myself switching off from boredom waiting for the story to get going again. The author makes sure you never forget the protagonist is gay either, this adds nothing to the story.

protagonist lets the book down

this could have been great. but why undermine your story by making the lead character an annoying child?
