About this listen

Who would sever a tongue from a living mouth? Or kill a pathetic, homeless old man? Or frighten a young doctor into silence? The questions are piling up, and Doug McHarg can't stop asking them - especially when he's warned off by both his boss in the local police and by Scotland Yard. The pattern that emerges is of a powerful organisation with links to the throne and the White House. And all that stands against them is McHarg: a discontented copper with nothing to lose.© Reginald Hill; (P)Oakhill Publishing Ltd Espionage Police Procedurals Suspense

"All he asked was to be left alone."

I very much enjoy the author's Dalziel and Pascoe series with the larger than life Fat Andy and his university degree holding sidekick. Great characters, changing writing style but always humorous with a well woven plot. Who Guards A Prince?I is different, a stand alone, not part of the series and, although well written and an easy read, it lacks the humour so pervasive in his detective series. Births writing is sharp, the story almost an unusual telling of a Romeo and Juliet romance.
Narration by Ian Redford is excellent

Another super Hill book

This book will especially appeal to conspiracy theorists imo, dealing as it does with the murky - and murderous - worlds of certain secret societies and sleazy politicians.

Hard to write a review that doesn't contain a spoiler in one form or another; e.g. my only quibble with this book, and why I've only given it four stars, is because the ending is just a little bit too tidy, and real life isn't like that, is it?

Highly recommended, nonetheless. A really riveting listen!

Good easy listening

Another good easy story from RH. Great characters and realistic storyline that builds well. Good ending.

Reginald Hill is surprisingly good

I’ve only read a few of his books and I was kind of reluctant to go with this but this and they generally don’t disappoint so take a risk … not a mad fan of the Daziel & Pascoe apart from on Tv but the others are worth it

Good story

Reader not the best. Characters not distinctive, and pronunciation problems with Scottish names. Good story.

Not for me

What a dull novel. I just could not sustain any interest and gave up. Perhaps it got better but I have an extensive library, many books safely stored in my archive and am not prepared to waste precious time. Will return forthwith and without regret!

Hill in James Bond mode. Not his best

I love Reginald Hill mostly, but having listened to a number there is a slightly unpleasant unsophisticated attitude to (and depiction of) women in his books, which is much more marked in these earlier ones. I could imagine Hill - who normally is so subtle - behind the words struggling away with the writing of this one. I did not enjoy it, and couldnt sympathise or relate to the surprisingly two dimensional characters.

This may be one Hill was cutting his teeth with, or writing as fodder for publisher and James Bond loving public.

Bit far fetched

I like Reginald Hill and was looking forward to another book like ,The Woodcutter. Not quite in same league

An other brilliant story by Reginald Hill

The story was easy to get Into and hard to put down
the perfect function of a book

Average

Not as good as many of his other titles but engaging enough and I read to the end.
