About this listen

Madonna. Andy Warhol. Keith Haring. Fab 5 Freddie. Debbie Harry. Julian Schnabel. Jean-Michel Basquiat's transition from the subways to the chic gallery spaces of Manhattan brought the artist into the company of many of New York's established and aspiring stars. Unable to deal with the demands that his new fame brought, in 1987, at the age of 27, Basquiat, the most successful black visual artist in history, died from a heroin overdose.

Widow Basquiat is an exploration of the artist as seen through the eyes of his muse, Suzanne. It is a love story like no other. This audio edition is read by Noma Dumezweni, who starred as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Incredible, moving story…

Such a sad story & one that needs to be listened to. Basquiat’s rise & then fall from grace due to drug abuse & his rising fame is worth listening to as is his relationship with Suzanne, told brilliantly in this audiobook.

Simply fabulous

I had this book in my wish list for a few months before I decided to purchase. I should have bought it sooner! The story is told so beautifully, it’s the most engrossed I have been in an audio book yet!

Brutal and beautiful.

Absolute poetry, this book. Incredible and incredibly difficult life stories narrated with such beauty and power. Noma Dumezweni’s narration is splendid. A real shame that the rhythm of her voice and of the text is spoilt by really poor sound editing at the end/beginning of chapters.

Good book, poor production.

This is a great read for anyone interested in Jean Michel Basquiat or the NYC art world of the eighties, but it’s let down slightly by the awkward production of the audio book here.
Every time there’s a new chapter (which is often) there’s no pause between the last word spoken in one chapter and the title of the new chapter. So it sounds like a continuation of the same sentence and doesn’t make sense. This happens every few minutes as there’s so many chapters.
Also some chapters are repeated, and the reader mispronounces the word SAMO throughout the entire book, which jars if you know the correct pronunciation.
If you can suffer these moments then you’ll enjoy a fascinating window into the life of someone very close to a compelling artist.
