Summary

Few books have had such an impact as Wild Swans: a popular best seller and a critically acclaimed history of China that opened up the country to the world.

Through the story of three generations of women in her own family - the grandmother given to the warlord as a concubine, the Communist mother, and the daughter herself - Jung Chang reveals the epic history of China's 20th century.

Breathtaking in its scope, unforgettable in its descriptions, this is a masterpiece that is extraordinary in every way.

Gets under your skin

This brave book allows us an insight into the China that we were never meant to see. Compelling and very very sad.

Glad I tried it again.

I tried to read this in my 20s, but it was too heavy. I’m glad I tried again, it is an amazing book.
Telling the story through her family is the best way of sharing such an enormous and complex history.
It made me rethink my ideas about communism too, why does such a good idea in principle always end up in a fat dictator?

Very insightful into China's history.

Having read this book over a decade ago I decided to listen to it on audio. There is so much in this book, you could listen to it several times and still be learning. I believe this provides a great insight into how Communism came about, and provides a backdrop to how China works today, and how most people in China unwittingly view the western world.

A dynamic journey

if, at the end of a story, I feel like I've been on a long journey then to me it's a good story. Wild swans is that and so much more. A very real and educational account of 20th Century China. Absolutely incredible.

A masterpiece.... a poetic heartrending saga

A breathtaking epic story of courage, idealism and faith exploited by tyranny... And so portentous in the light of current political developments in China

An unexpectedly great book.

When i first started this book i was not sure about it as it took me a while to get into it. However the more i tried to dislike it the more i became interested. The author describes events really well and it’s really hard to put down. I am really glad i read this. Book clubs are great as they make you read things you would not usually read.
