Summary

The Civil War was over: Lee had surrendered to Grant at Appomattox courthouse in Virginia.

Four young warriors, tired of the horrors of war, dedicated themselves to a new life in the West, helping others along the way. Freed slaves also were making an exodus from the South, hoping to survive and find true freedom in the West. Texas was the Promised Land for many, although the Lone Star State had also suffered the ravages of the war.
