Summary
The Civil War was over: Lee had surrendered to Grant at Appomattox courthouse in Virginia.
Four young warriors, tired of the horrors of war, dedicated themselves to a new life in the West, helping others along the way. Freed slaves also were making an exodus from the South, hoping to survive and find true freedom in the West.
