Summary
Sava has the best house in all of Lukos. He built it himself, dreaming of the day when he and Milan, the man he loved, could live there and brave the harsh winters of Lukos together—only to be devastated when Milan was found dead in the spring. Fraught with grief, Sava resigns himself to spending his winters alone.
Then a stranger appears on his doorstep, and everything changes.
Victor is a scholar from Gerakia, a land known for its long summers and vibrant history, and he has never been more unprepared in his life. Abandoned on the inhospitable island of Lukos after a disastrous relationship, Victor has to adapt quickly to survive. It helps, of course, that he’s taken in by Sava, who has the biggest heart of any man Victor has ever known. Victor and Sava start to make a home together, growing close as snow falls outside, but the true danger of a Lukos winter is closer than they suspect....

still good on the second listen...
Think this might be my favourite of Iris Foxgloves books except maybe the most recent about deaths consort whose name I forget. Heartwarming, a bit dirty, nice mythos, a fine place to escape too.

A Quiet, beautiful story
As always I'm always game to do a re-read in the form of listening to the audio book.
Narration: 4 stars
Story: 3.5 stars
Kris Antham is really a talented narrator and I really love listening to him even though sometimes the editing misses things that should have been cut. Here he was great even though at times I couldn't understand what Sava was saying with how heavily accented he was made.
Now when it comes to the story I'm expecting a certain level of spiciness from Iris Foxglove that admittedly since the 3rd-4th book in the Starian Cycle it had began to patter out, so scenes fading to black and reminisced about is not my preference and this is what happens here between Sava and Victor in part. Really it's a quiet affair between them despite every thing else going on.
On the other hand though we get beautiful and imaginative landscapes of Lukos with a lot of history and found family and that's quite amazing!
I still miss the heat though xD

I loved the story
The plot was quite simple and I did not care I could predict it. I wanted to keep listening because I cared about Victor's well-being. The writing was flawed at places. There were chapters where the author did not show but tell and at times the wording was in your face, where nuance would suffice.
The narrator was great at performing and voices but also not consistent. A few times he lost his inspiration and sounded like summarizing, for a couple of sentences.
