About this listen

The il’Drach have conquered half a galaxy behind the civilization-ending powers of their mixed-species children.

Half-human Rohan, exhausted by a decade fighting for their Empire, has paid a secret and terrible price for his freedom.

Now retired, he strives to live a quiet life towing starships for the space station Wistful. His most pressing problems are finding the perfect cup of coffee and talking to a gorgeous shuttle tech without tripping over his own tongue.

A nearby, long-dormant wormhole is opened by a ship full of angry refugees, and the many eyes of the Empire focus uncomfortably on Wistful.

As scientists, spies, and assassins converge, reverting to the monster the Empire created is the surest way to protect his friends. And the surest way to lose them.

Superb

What can I say about Wistful Ascending, the MC Rohan, and the prose and structure J.C.M. Berne enthuses the reader with, that has not already been said? The hype has been constant, and it has been a pleasure to discover that it is all true. This is one of those books that peeks behind the scenes of a hero’s life to find that they are just a person trying to make their way through the trials and tribulations, just as we are. Okay, they have extraordinary powers, but they still have to deal with those who don’t listen, or make friends in unexpected places, or face ordinary dilemmas of what to wear! And no, this is not humdrum. It makes Rohan, and the side characters, real and when they face true peril, which happens often, leaves you rooting for them. The rollercoaster ride from real life into that of a superhero is there to make you delve below the surface, and for me the juxtaposition works well. Believe the hype, join the Rohan fan club. I listened to this on audiobook, and Wayne Farrell’s narration fitted perfectly.

slice of life superhero chaos

this one has a zany, vibrant energy. dad jokes keep things light for the most part, although the second half brings an unexpected depth to proceedings. i would've been interested in a less episodic and more serialised story, but for what it was it was a joy to listen to
