Summary
Could a nightmare be used as a murder weapon? That's the provocative question confronting Gurney in the thrilling new installment in this series of international bestsellers. The former NYPD star homicide detective is called upon to solve a baffling puzzle: Four people who live in different parts of the country and who seem to have little in common, report having had the same dream - a terrifying nightmare involving a bloody dagger with a carved wolf's head on the handle. All four are subsequently found with their wrists cut - apparent suicides - and the weapon used in each case was a wolf's head dagger.
Police zero in quickly on Richard Hammond, a controversial psychologist who conducts hypnotherapy sessions at a spooky old Adirondack inn called Wolf Lake Lodge. It seems that each of the victims had gone there to meet with Hammond shortly before turning up dead.
Troubled by odd holes in the official approach to the case, Gurney begins his own investigation - an action that puts him in the crosshairs of not only an icy murderer and the local police but the darkest corner of the federal government. As ruthless as the blizzard trapping him in the sinister eeriness of Wolf Lake, Gurney's enemies set out to keep him from the truth at any cost - including an all-out assault on the sanity of his beloved wife Madeleine.
With his emotional resources strained to the breaking point, Gurney must throw himself into a deadly battle of wits with the most frightening opponent he has ever faced.
Wolf Lake is the new work by a writer hailed by the New York Times as "masterly" - and it furthers the adventures of Dave Gurney, a detective reviewers have compared to Sherlock Holmes.

What a disappointment.
Loved the first two Gurney novels...endured the third, returned the fourth. The new narrator reads like this is the first time he's seen the words and I don't care about the absolutely uninteresting minutiae of Gurney's marriage to his painful wife. I want a murder mystery, not an Aga saga. Beyond disappointed.

Where is Jeff Harding?
I have listened to all John Verdon’s books narrated by Jeff Harding with great pleasure. Why on earth have you switched to Christopher Lane? There is no way he can take over from Jeff Harding. He’s destroyed all my pleasure in the later books. Bring back Harding!!!!

Hooked from the opening page
Would you consider the audio edition of Wolf Lake to be better than the print version?
The setting in a remote location in formidable weather helps to build an atmosphere of isolation and supense. The characters are believeable, really well drawn and the story unfolded with some surprises. Listening to it made these elements all the more enjoyable.
What other book might you compare Wolf Lake to, and why?
The premise is similar to groups of people in an isolated location and who are in danger, some meeting grisly ends. Along the lines of The House on Haunted Hill. Dark Matter also evokes this kind of atmosphere.
What three words best describe Christopher Lane’s performance?
The wrong narrator
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, absolutely.
Any additional comments?
Will certainly read more books by this author, an excellent first experience.

This wolf howls with excellence
I've listened to all of the Dave Gurney tales and they are wonderfully twisty and full of excellent characters
I would have give 5 stars for narration but I prefer Jeff Harding who performed all the others

New narrator
What did you like most about Wolf Lake?
Just like to say to anyone worried about having a new narrator - I prefer Christopher Lane reading this book. Jeff Harding is excellent too, but I kept getting pulled out of the story due to hearing Jack Reacher's verbal mannerisms. If you don't listen to the Reacher books it's a moot point - but for all the Reacher fans out there, you know what I mean :)
What does Christopher Lane bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
He's a solid narrator, and a plus that he doesn't sound like Jack Reacher :)

Performance spoils the book.
Have really enjoyed the first 4 Gurney books which were excellently narrated. New production for 5th book was awful - nearly gave up on it several times. Narrators voice was very monotone with very little difference between characters. Was. Hale gong at times to know who was talking. Poor decision by the publisher to change production agencies.

Poor narration
Why change the narrator part way through a series? Flat, monotone delivery seriously detracts from the story

Wrong narrator
I’ve really enjoyed these books so far - brilliant in fact.
But, we get a new narrator now rather than the excellent Jeff Harding and it’s destroyed the characters. I’m only 15 mins in but just NOT enjoying it!
I may even delete the book.
