About this listen

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

AN INDIE BESTSELLER

“One of the great thinkers of our generation . . . I feel fresher and smarter and happier for sitting down with her.”—Jameela Jamil, iWeigh Podcast

The co-host of the Maintenance Phase podcast and creator of Your Fat Friend equips you with the facts to debunk common anti-fat myths and with tools to take action for fat justice

The pushback that shows up in conversations about fat justice takes exceedingly predicable form. Losing weight is easy—calories in, calories out. Fat people are unhealthy. We’re in the midst of an obesity epidemic. Fat acceptance “glorifies obesity.” The BMI is an objective measure of size and health. Yet, these myths are as readily debunked as they are pervasive.

In “You Just Need to Lose Weight,” Aubrey Gordon equips listeners with the facts and figures to reframe myths about fatness in order to dismantle the anti-fat bias ingrained in how we think about and treat fat people. Bringing her dozen years of community organizing and training to bear, Gordon shares the rhetorical approaches she and other organizers employ to not only counter these pernicious myths, but to dismantle the anti-fat bias that so often underpin them.

As conversations about fat acceptance and fat justice continue to grow, “You Just Need to Lose Weight” will be essential to ensure that those conversations are informed, effective, and grounded in both research and history.

Interesting and thought provoking

Aubrey Gordon is an interesting character, with lots to say, and all of it well-researched. I found her on her Maintenance Phase podcast, and bought the book to support her. I now know much more about fat politics and it was an easy and stimulating listen. I feel that medical professionals should have a delve into her books and spoken-word works, as her theories are forward thinking and sensible. There are no answers here, but opportunities to change one’s own mindset, or others’ if necessary, and tips for further research or responses on behalf of oneself or others, to divert intrusive questions and comments. There is more to being fat than eating too many pies, and all of us would do well to understand that. Aubrey is a great starting point to develop empathy, and this book is suitable for both fat and ‘regular’ people.

Insightful and Necessary

Great audio book. Definitely recommend! It will help you understand intersectionality in how fat people are treated. As someone who struggles with body image, it helped me validating my experience. Thank you!

Not enough stars to rate this as high as I’d like

Aubrey is an unbelievably good writer. She writes with passion, empathy and clarity about a topic that can be so emotive for so many different reasons. She is somehow both authoritative and humble at once, pointing listeners to alternative sources from diverse perspectives and challenging us to build our own knowledge base from the many voices of fat people around the world speaking first hand about their experiences.
As a MP listener I also appreciated being able to hear you read your own words rather than hear someone else reading them.
Your work is a gift, Aubrey - thank you x
