Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
What do you do when your perfect life spins out of control?
A gripping psychological thriller that combines the emotional warmth of Man and Boy with the excitement of The Murder Bag.
Tara Carver seems to have the perfect life. A loving mother and wife and a business woman who runs her own company, she's the sort of person you'd want to live next door to, who might even become your best friend.
But what sort of person is she really?
Because in one night of madness, on a work trip far from home, she puts all this at risk. And suddenly her dream life becomes a living nightmare when the married man she spent one night with tells her he wants a serious relationship with her. And that he won't leave her or her precious family alone until she agrees.
There seems to be only one way out. And it involves murder....

Despite good bits, flawed from the start
There's some good stuff in this story: the irreplaceable preciousness of love; the dangers and destruction involved in straying within a marriage; the psychological loss of purpose in the job market as industries etc change or die (here work in the music press); the terrible rippling costs of selfishness ... It's also well constructed with Tara and her husband Christian relating the story alternately - and it's crisply written. BUT at the end I feel I've been on this carefully designed roller coaster of psychological teasing which is ultimately a cheat. The premise on which the whole is built from the start is flawed and the highly complex plot during which five or even more suspects for the murder are thrown up becomes more and more ridiculous. There must be a solid base in reality for a psychological thriller to work.
Tara (loving mother of her adored little boy, deeply in love with her husband) has a one-night stand in Tokyo on a business promotion trip in Tokyo (she runs her own dating agency). On their return to UK, the man re-appears to stalk and threaten Tara in increasingly frightening ways. So far so credible. Tara's life spins out of control (as it would) as she determines to silence the man once and for all her way: not by reporting him to the police (in which case Tony Parsons would have no novel), but in a way which can end only in murder.
Without spoiling it for listeners, the two main problems for me were the ridiculous scenarios and the unlikeable characters, It would make a good television drama series - the sort that keep you tense all the way through but finally cheated.

Unlikely storyline
Although this was well written I thought the story was very unlikely and predictable. There were few times when I did not want to leave the book down and only reluctantly picked it up again. The stalking part has been done so often that it is hackneyed and the ending left many unanswered questions. I enjoyed the readers voice and the characterisations were polished and in part redeemed what was a boring, unsatisfactory book. Not for me

Good but....
Generally a good story but when the lead character gets on your nerves and you feel very little sympathy towards them, it taints it slightly. Good narration but the ‘whining’ tone of Tara drove me a little mad. Several times I thought I’d have to stop listening but I pushed through.

Good story but poor recording
Really enjoyed the story but let down by Audis quality. The Audio volume jumps around too much. Can’t be very good QA processes in place

Parsons shows his versatility
Anyone thinking of an extramarital one night stand (PS: I’m not!!!) would think after reading Your Neighbour’s Wife. If you’re looking for laughs this isn’t the book for you but it’s certainty a gripping listen and one that I would recommend. Having two narrators worked

Absorbing
This novel was a great choice to listen to. Having two narrators as the main characters, read by sensitive performers, added to the enjoyment. There is so much to entertain. An accidental one night stand has so many repercussions, including murder. It looks forensically into relationships, good and bad, with surprising turns in the story.

Tony Parsons has done it again
Tony is my favourite author. I loved Laura’s voice from the outset. It was believable and easy on the ear. I thought Tom was a little bit too cultured for the character. Then the story took over and I was enthralled as ever. I listened and finished the book over the course of a week.
I would and will recommend this to everyone.
I hope we get another book soon from this wonderful author be it like this one or Max Wolfe.
