About this listen

From the author of My Sweet Girl comes a dangerously addictive new thriller about a lavish Sri Lankan wedding celebration that no one will ever forget.

When Amaya is invited to Kaavi's over-the-top wedding in Sri Lanka, Amaya is surprised and a little hurt to hear from her former best-friend after so many years of radio silence. But when Amaya learns that the groom is her very own ex-boyfriend, she is consumed by a single thought: she must stop the wedding from happening, no matter the cost.

But Amaya might not be the only one with a plan to keep the bride from getting her happily ever after. When Kaavi goes missing and is presumed dead, the evidence points towards Amaya.

Caught between excessive Sri Lankan wedding celebrations, old wounds and dark secrets, will Amaya be able to prove she's being framed for a murder she's almost positive she didn't commit?

Interesting, fresh and full of twists and turns.

This was a quite different and very interesting departure from my usual murder mystery whodunnits with destination thrillers being my favourite genre.
The reason this was so different and interesting was because although the destination wedding was set in Sri Lanka it actually was Sri Lankans getting married along with guests who were expats and it was really fascinating to hear all about the traditions of Sri Lankan weddings, plus all the fabulous outfits and the culture.
It started off with a Sri Lankan woman who now lives in the US.
I often avoid American narrators as some of them can just be a bit hard going and though I love US TV and film - I find a UK or Irish accent is more relaxing generally. However the narration was really excellent and I forgot completely that it was an American accent, perhaps because it was obvious it was being told by a Sri Lankan and of course her pronunciation of everything Sri Lankan was spot on.
We got to hear about her fascination with numerology and her rather exotic dating life!
Although it was all very suspensful in was also told with humour and at times it reminded me a tiny bit of the "Sweet Pea" series by CJ Skuse which was nice and done with a very light touch.
Then we were all packed off to Sri Lanka after she received an invite to her EX best friend's wedding to her ... EX boyfriend!

The story was told "then" and "now" style jumping back and forward which I think was done really well and kept it all fresh, flowing, tantalising and most intriguing with red herrings a plenty.
We got to find out so much about Columbo and the does and don'ts of visiting plus all the family culture of Sri Lankans.

The plot itself was very enthralling and I have to say I had no clue of what was going on with the bluffs and double bluffs and intricate plot twists and back stories.

I finished this morning and the final reveals stunned me so much that I will have to go back and re-read again as I had been so fooled by some of the blind alleys I was lead down.

I really enjoyed my "trip" to Sri Lanka, my immersion in the culture and meeting an eclectic range of characters so far from the usual or indeed anyone I know.

I recommend 100% as it really is very well written and I have been picking and being furious I picked such a load of real stinkers recently that I did not know if this might be even my thing.... but it certainly was. What a lovely surprise.

It really was just like being shown round Sri Lanka (Columbo specifically) by a native and then the adventure begins ... enjoy!

I will be pre-ordering Amanda Jalatissa's next book for sure.
