Summary
漱石の回想をまとまった形で書いた門下生としては小宮豊隆や森田草平がよく知られているが、内田百閒もまた、直接接した漱石の貴重な姿をこのような形で遺した。 内田百閒は、岡山の裕福な実家で祖母に溺愛されて育ったため、我儘で頑固、偏屈で無愛想な性格であったと言われるが、16歳のときに漱石の「吾輩は猫である」を読んで傾倒。東京帝大の22歳のときに、内幸町の胃腸病院に入院していた漱石に会いに行き、以後、門下生の一人となった。 その訪ねた胃腸病院で緊張した百閒に漱石が気を遣って接する様子、新聞連載中で不機嫌な漱石が木曜会で門下生の一人を珍しく罵倒したこと、生活に窮して静養先の湯河原まで訪ねてきた百閒の無心に漱石が快く応じて温泉に入らせて帰らせたこと、岩波の漱石全集の校正に携わった百閒を悩ました漱石の文章の語尾の無頓着さ、貰い受けた書き潰し原稿に残っていた漱石の「遺毛」、百閒宅に掛けてある漱石の初期の書画を訪ねてきた漱石に回収されてしまったことなどのエピソードが語られている。 また百閒は、鉄道マニアぶりで有名であるが、そのほか宮城道雄と親交があったほど琴に通じていたこと、「錬金術」と自ら称したほどの借金癖があったことなどでも知られている。それらは文章中でも垣間見られる。 本書は、漱石と龍之介のことを書いた一書であるが、このオーディオブックで収録したのは漱石に関する部分の抜粋である。
