Improving Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation Patient Care and Outcomes

By: American Heart Association
  • Summary

  • This podcast series will improve clinicians’ understanding of (1) anticoagulant stewardship/aspirin use in patients with cardiovascular disease, particularly as it relates to management of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, or NVAF (i.e., identify patients who are or are not appropriate candidates, individualize treatment, dosing considerations, etc.); (2) current evidence-based guidelines and clinical data in managing patients with NVAF; (3) “clinical inertia” and how it may impact patient outcomes; and (4) appropriate management of patients with NVAF.

Episodes
  • Heart In Sync: A-fib and Lifestyle Links
    Feb 14 2024

Patients often wonder what triggers initial onset and subsequent episodes of AF, and evidence increasingly supports the importance of lifestyle and risk factor modification for primary and secondary prevention of atrial fibrillation. We will discuss the current evidence related to common patient-reported triggers, as well as the latest evidence-based guidelines related to risk factor modification for prevention of AF onset, slowing of AF progression, and improved AF-related outcomes.

  • When Medication is Not Tolerated or Not Enough: Interventional and Surgical Approaches to Atrial Fibrillation
    Feb 14 2024

We aim to provide guidance by exploring interventional approaches to the management of atrial fibrillation and mitigation of thromboembolic risk. We will provide a review of interventional approaches including AF ablation for the management of atrial fibrillation and briefly discuss left atrial occlusion devices. Additionally, surgical techniques will be described in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Lastly, incidence, risk factors and management of post-operative AF will be discussed.

  • Clot Matters: Navigating Atrial Fibrillation Anticoagulation in Special Populations
    Feb 13 2024

We aim to provide guidance by highlighting the current evidence in anticoagulation management of special populations including those with CKD, the elderly and those with concomitant acute coronary syndromes. We will provide a case-based approach to these challenging situations with multidisciplinary perspectives from pharmacy and cardiology.
