On Things We Left Behind

By: Saredo & Surer Mohamed
  • Summary

  • On Things We Left Behind is a story-driven podcast that explores the hidden afterlife of war. In what ways does leaving your country behind shape the life that you rebuild? That’s the question that the hosts, daughters of Somali refugees, seek to explain. The podcast takes an in-depth look into the lives of those who were made to start all over, and meditates on the things that are left behind in war’s wake.

On Things We Left Behind was one of the three finalists for LaunchPod 2019, the UK’s first podcast competition.

Makes you realise what some people have to go through

Just existing in the world when it’s not particularly willing to help you even though you have a lot to offer them. People mistreat other humans daily for no reason, however, the people we tend to write off as nobodies because they come from somewhere else usually come from better conditions until the inevitable. The simple answer to why most immigrants are where they are is definitely not because they want to be, moreover it’s a matter of circumstances making the choices for them. Be kind. You never know whom you are addressing. This series reminds us that refugees are indeed people who have encountered scenarios that may break most ordinary people. Only extraordinary people have the strength to come full circle and re establish themselves. Power to them all.
