  • Parent Alert! Giannis Delivers a Life Lesson for the Ages!
    Apr 29 2024

Giannis Antetokounmpo (say that 5 times fast!), the all star forward and one time MVP of the National Basketball Association's Milwaukee Bucks is currently experiencing painful playoff adversity in more ways than one. At publishing time of this episode (April 29, 2024) he is hobbled by a late season injury that has kept him out of the series with the Indiana Pacers which has also contributed to them facing first round elimination for the second consecutive year. Ugh! So let's rewind a bit...

Back on April 26, 2023. The Eastern Conference #1 seeded Milwaukee Bucks had just been eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by the #8 seed, the Miami Heat. By most observers, this was an unexpectedly quick end to the Bucks' season.

In this short episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast we discuss NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo's answer to the following question in a post game press conference following the disappointing defeat: "Do you view this season as a failure?"

We are downright giddy of the widespread broadcast of this press conference question. We are likewise jazzed that it was asked of a well respected, well grounded, not to mention immensely talented, professional athlete such as Giannis.

The question and answer provides a golden opportunity for you as a parent to really think about your own thinking relative to "failure" and "success." What is your definition of success? We believe this question and your answers can open the door of discovery as you intentionally engage in meaningful discussions with your spouse and teens concerning your definitions of "failure" and "success." Enjoy!

Moms/Dads--we know you're soooooper BUSY! And we know you're often proud of it--haha! We get it and applaud your never ending efforts to excel and doing your best to help your teen athlete or performer excel! Bravo!

Question: Should we proudly display the Badge of Busyness? We're not saying it's a terrible thing, but...and this is a big but...is there anything we can do as high performing parents of high performing teens to alleviate this incessant BUSYNESS that is both a blessing and a curse?! It turns out there is, you can, and probably already are!! But let's check in on this anyway.

We're going to get busy (sorry, we are dads) explore in today's episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast (and next week we'll be role playing an abbreviated coaching session with a parent who wears the Badge of Busyness!) We also destroy the age old, worn out, and deeply flawed title of "time management!"

Let's go--we're excited to challenge your thinking today about going fast and we're also jazzed to chat about The 3 R's. C'mon, we're coaching and psychology nuts so we gotta throw in a Consonant List every once in awhile!

    Enjoy!

  • PARENT: "What's This Gonna Cost Me?"
    Apr 8 2024

We're weighing costs and benefits and outcomes today on The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast! Let's address some very important questions that you as parents need to ask yourselves as you make decisions about support, incentives, and rewards with the intent of raising your teen's performance and creating a great life experience for them. And, as you decide on what type of support you provide, what are the ramifications besides the obvious (and not so obvious) price tags?! Here are a few teaser questions to ponder:

--Do I pay or reward for performance such as stats, ratings, scores, or rankings?

    --Do I incentivize outcomes?

--Have I considered the ramifications for everyone involved (team/group, teammates/peers, coaches/leaders)?

--How do I really know or learn what to reinforce or incentivize?

And...there's more! We'll also dive into the following critical concepts:

    1) The reality that teens are very susceptible to feeling as if they are a burden on their very supportive parents.

    2) How can you create transformation rather than going through the motions of making mere transactions in your parent/teen athlete--performer relationship.

    3) Have I sufficiently pondered whether my actions and support are "costs" or "investments?" What do I truly value and how does that translate to my support of my teen athlete/performer?

Let's goooooooooooo moms and dads--let's up your game!

  • "Bracket Watching!" Should You or Shouldn't You, Parents/Teen Performers?!
    Apr 1 2024

This episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast. is no joke (really)! Happy April 1st everyone!

Today we explore a very intriguing question from one of our teen listeners (ha-this isn't just for parents!) who competes as a high school wrestler:

Should I or shouldn't I "bracket watch?" What a great question! And what a timely question too as most of the world (even if you don't like basketball) is aware of the fun and frenzied "bracket watching" that goes on during the winding up of the college basketball season as several dozen teams engage single elimination tourney bracket craziness known as March Madness (even though it always ends in early April--so there's that!). So let's tip this thing off and play--here are a few things we'll address in today's discussion:

    --What is "bracket watching?"

--Will "bracket watching" help me perform better? Will it harm my performance?

--What is the best approach to help me focus in a tournament or competition scenario?

We hope you love this episode and find it useful! And while you're here, would you please share it and/or this episode with your parent friends (or teen athlete) who reside with teen athletes/performers. \

We do this for you and cannot do it without you. Please drop us a 5 star review on your favorite pod platform if you feel we are deserving of such glowing comments--it will help our podcast become available to more parents!

We also LOVE the feedback and/or questions you send to us at createtransformbecome@gmail.com. We'd be honored to discuss your "parenting your athlete/performer question/crisis/issue" on an upcoming episode. We drop new ones every MONDAY!

Moms/Dads--we want you to elevate your parenting (and so do your kids!). You CAN do this if you "Stop Parenting & Start Coaching" your superstar teen! Let's goooooo! -Nate & Steve
