The Last Frontier Podcast

By: Daniel Meuninck Andrew Smith
  • Summary

  • Your two hosts of this podcast work as professional guides in the Alaskan outdoor tourism industry and started this podcast as a fun way to keep busy during the pandemic summer of 2020. With uncertainty in what employment might look like, Danny and Andrew still wanted to share the beauty of Alaska with people and this podcast was a good way to achieve that goal. Alaska is an incredible place everybody should put on their destination bucket list. Each episode opens with a beer review highlighting a local Alaskan brewery and then tackles a different topic relating to what makes Alaska such a unique place in the world. With all the fun being had drinking Alaskan brews and sharing fascinating information about the Last Frontier State, what started as a fun short term project has morphed into a long term endeavor. With this decision, investments were made in much better production equipment and the sound quality drastically improves starting in Phase II of the podcast with Episode 17 (Feb 21, 2021 release date). We hope you enjoy the content and strongly encourage you to visit Alaska in the future!

  • Alaskan Brewery Spotlight: Stoney Creek Brewhouse
    Jun 9 2024

With the first half of every episode dedicated to reviewing an Alaskan craft beer as a way to support our local Alaskan breweries, it's about time we invited a brew master on the podcast. On today's episode, we chat with Greg Haas who is the owner of Stoney Creek Brewhouse in Seward, Alaska to get his insights on what it means to brew beer in the Last Frontier. What is the craft beer scene like in Alaska? How does community play a role in making a good beer. And does Greg prefer to go by Brew Fella, Brew Master or Brew God?! It's the episode we got free beer for!

  • Fire on the Frontier
    May 26 2024

In 2019, we had to cut our summer season short due to the forest fires that wreaked havoc on the Kenai Peninsula. Living in a temperate rainforest climate, it's easy to forget that Alaska is prime real estate for forest fires to burn hundreds of thousands to millions of acres each summer. On today's episode, we invite Lily Coyle, a public information officer with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources' Division of Forestry and Fire Protection, on the podcast to discuss fighting forest fires in the state of Alaska. How are fires in Alaska started? What steps can you take to prevent human caused fires? And will a root beer step up to the plate and score as high as a beer?! It's the episode that's a smokin' good time!
