  • 150. The Power of Parent Coaching | Benefits and Rewards and How it Differs from Psychotherapy
    Oct 22 2024
    • What Is Parent Coaching?

      • Professional parent coaching provides psychoeducation and practical strategies.

      • It’s directive, goal-oriented, and typically lasts 1-6 months.

      • It focuses on introducing and discussing new parenting strategies, offering support, and devising plans to implement them.

    • Key Benefits of Parent Coaching:

      • Improved family communication.

      • Better parenting strategies and confidence.

      • Solution-focused thinking.

      • Mindset shifts in how to parent tweens or teens.

      • Strengthened parent-child relationships.

    • Who Can Benefit from Parent Coaching?

      • Families facing issues like screen time struggles, communication breakdowns, transitions (e.g., marriage, death, adoption), and behavioral challenges.

      • Parents of children with ADHD, dyslexia, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).

      • Support for parents dealing with adolescent mental health challenges, substance abuse, or co-parenting issues.

    • My Approach to Parent Coaching:

      • Grounded in mindfulness and intentionality.

      • Professional experience as an LCSW for nearly 30 years with knowledge of mental health, child development, and family dynamics.

      • Personal experience growing up in a self-sufficient family in New Hampshire, which shaped my approach to self-determination and family cooperation.

      • Incorporating mindfulness practices to help parents stay present and grounded.

    Parent Coaching vs. Psychotherapy:

    • Coaching is more focused on the present and future, with the goal of achieving family harmony.

    • Psychotherapy addresses mental health issues and is often focused on healing past traumas.

    • I provide examples of when therapy is necessary and when coaching is a better fit.

    • Family Coaching:

      • Family coaching involves working with both parents and children to create real change.

      • I discuss how family coaching leads to breakthroughs and faster progress than individual sessions.
