Crescono così, in quel "composto di razze diverse costrette a condividere la terra", Julien Dominici e i gemelli Agnese e Alberto Therrime. Crescono legandosi fra loro, come se fosse possibile per un Dominici e per una Therrime essere amici e poi amarsi. Solo i bambini possono crederlo, solo le donne.

Stupisce che questi quattro racconti di Scerbanenco non siano stati notati e ripubblicati prima d'ora, per la verità che portano, nonché la loro importanza di testimonianza su come fu vissuto un periodo storico. Forse perché furono pubblicati nell'unica edizione nel 1946, tempi difficili e fragili di passaggio. Forse perché la successiva fama di inventore della "Milano calibro nove" mise in ombra l'altra, importante, produzione dello scrittore. Sono racconti di guerra, ambientati negli anni feroci.
