Nach Abschluss seines esoterischen Hauptwerkes, der ›Geheimwissenschaft im Umriss‹ von 1910, suchte Rudolf Steiner immer wieder nach neuen Wegen, die nunmehr im Kern entwickelte Anthroposophie in andere sprachliche und textuelle Formen zu bringen. Mit den Schriften ›Ein Weg zur Selbsterkenntnis des Menschen‹ (1912) und ›Die Schwelle der geistigen Welt‹ (1913) unternahm er den Versuch, zentrale Aspekte des anthroposophischen Denkens in Form von kurzen Meditationstexten zu entwickeln.

In seinen Aufsätzen Ausführung der Dreigliederung des sozialen Organismus aus den Jahren 1919/20 reagierte Steiner, wie schon in seinen "Kernpunkten der sozialen Frage", auf die Krise des modernen Bewusstseins, die in den gesellschaftlichen Konflikten des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts sowie im Ersten Weltkrieg ihren destruktiven Ausdruck gefunden hat. Er schlägt einen spirituell begründeten Ansatz zur Lösung der sozialen Frage vor, der als ein dritter Weg zwischen Sozialismus und Kapitalismus verstanden werden kann.

In dieser Schrift setzt Rudolf Steiner sich mit Grundgedanken Goethes und Fichtes auseinander und entwickelt dabei die erkenntnistheoretischen Grundlagen seiner späteren anthroposophischen Geisteswissenschaft.

Originally published in 1894, Rudolf Steiner's Die Philosophie der Freiheit was considered by Steiner to be his most enduring work above all others. This is the first English translation, which was done in 1916. Two years later, in 1918, he revised it to be more in line with The Theosophical Society's philosophy. In many ways, this edition is truer to his spirit then all other translations, including some of the modern ones.
