The Invisible Man was the fourth sci-fi novel written by Wells in the 1890s. The main character, Griffin, is one of the intimidating villains in all popular literature. The archetypal "mad scientist," Griffin devotes himself to an obsessive study of optics and realizes his ambition to render livings things permanently invisible. After making a cat invisible, he successfully applies the procedure to himself. After causing chaos in London, he travels to the village of Iping in Sussex and takes up residence in a local hotel.

The story concerns the young and vivacious Emma Watson, one of six children of a widowed clergyman. Emma has spent most of her life under the care of a wealthy aunt of liberal views, and has received a good education. However, when her aunt enters into a second marriage, Emma is forced to return to the family home, where she is affronted by the crass hunting for husbands undertaken her sisters, Penelope and Margaret.

Praised by EM Forster in his essay series Aspects of the Novel, Flecker’s Magic is a fantasy in which imaginative American Spike Flecker, an aspiring young painter enduring a life of poverty in Paris while he learns his craft, meets a girl in a café who tells him that she is a witch. The girl gives him a ring, which will grant him one wish. But faced with the omnipotent power of the wish, how is the young man to decide just exactly for what he should wish?
