On what should be a quiet Sunday morning, Inspector Montalbano is called to a murder scene on the Sicilian coast. A man has discovered his father dead in his Vigàtan beach house: his body slumped on the dining room floor, his morning coffee spilt across the table, and a single gunshot wound at the base of his skull.

In Inspector Montalbano’s coastal town of Vigàta, a surge of migrants have been coming in by boat, and all the town’s hands are on deck to help the arrivals. At the heart of the scene are the police - on the lookout for the people smugglers responsible - and long night shifts are rendering Inspector Montalbano and his officers exhausted. Then one night, while Montalbano is enduring yet another gruelling stint at the port, a separate crime is committed - unexplained, unexpected, and unpleasant. Elena, the dressmaker at the town’s famous tailors, has been found dead....

Sicily, April 16, 1677. From his deathbed, Charles III's viceroy, don Angel de Guzmàn, marquis of Castel de Roderigo, names his wife, donna Eleonora, as his successor. Eleonora di Mora is a highly intelligent and capable woman who immediately applies her political acumen to heal the scarred soul of Palermo, a city afflicted by poverty, misery, and the frequent uprisings they entail. The marquise implements measures that include lowering the price of bread and establishing stipends for young couples wishing to marry - all considered seditious by the conservative city fathers.

After a hectic morning involving two rather irritating cases of mistaken identity, Inspector Montalbano finally arrives in his office ready find out what's troubling Vigàta this week. What he discovers is unnerving. A woman on her way home from work has been held up at gunpoint, chloroformed and kidnapped, but then released just hours later - unharmed and with all her possessions - into the open countryside. Later that day, Montalbano hears from Enzo, the owner of his favourite restaurant, that his niece has recently been the victim of the exact same crime.

Feeling his age as his birthday rolls round once again, Inspector Montalbano decides to cheer himself up by dealing with a young driver's road rage in his own unique way. But his joy is short-lived, as at police headquarters he receives an angry phone call from a supermarket boss; there's been a robbery at his store, and Montalbano's colleague is treating him as a suspect. On arrival at the scene, Montalbano quickly agrees with Inspector Augello that this was no ordinary break-in.

When a crazed elderly man and his sister begin firing bullets from their balcony down onto the Vigàta street below, Inspector Montalbano finds himself a reluctant television hero. A few days later, when a letter arrives containing a mysterious riddle, the Inspector becomes drawn into a perplexing treasure hunt set by an anonymous challenger. As the hunt intensifies, Montalbano is relieved to be offered the assistance of Arturo Pennisi, a young man eager to witness the detective's investigative skills firsthand.

Vigàta is bustling as the new filming location for a Swedish television series set in 1950. In the production frenzy, the director asks the locals to track down movies and vintage photos to faithfully recreate the air of Vigàta at that time. Meanwhile, Montalbano is grappling with a double mystery, one that emerges from the past and another that leads him into the future.

The lawyer and journalist Matteo Teresi discovers the existence of a secret sect whose members include priests, politicians, and regional VIPs. During the early morning hours, when the town’s churches are closed, the "Sect of the Angels" meets in the sacristy to carry out their holy office: initiating devout virgins into the rites of married life. Preying on their victims’ naivete, the hooded "elect" commit ignominious acts while promising the young women divine grace. In 1901, at a time of immense changes in Sicilian society, the scandal breaks nationwide.

Nel villaggio dietro la Collina Secca, dentro la Casa Strana, vive da sempre la vecchia Nonnamà, che mentre sbuccia frutta e verdure tiene i bambini di tutti, e racconta loro le storie più belle, quelle che sono anche un po’ vere ma non si sa mai fino a quanto. E così Nonnamà racconta la storia di Gnazio, che tanto tanto tempo fa viveva in quel villaggio e amava la terra e le piante, ma che poi era dovuto partire oltre il mare, ed era stato via così tanto che quando era tornato era forse troppo vecchio per avere una moglie, ma poi ne aveva trovata una, Maruzza.

Un robo absurdo en un supermercado, el encarcelamiento un tanto estrambótico de un capo de la mafia, un asesinato cometido durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Sin embargo, a pesar de la firme determinación con que Montalbano afronta la resolución de estos casos, su auténtica pasión es descifrar el contenido simbólico que encierran. «Todo crimen conlleva un mensaje, la cuestión es conocer el código de quien lo ha escrito», le recuerda un excéntrico sacerdote al comisario.

En una cálida noche siciliana, tras nadar un buen rato en las tranquilas aguas que se remansan a escasos metros de su casa a orillas del mar, Salvo Montalbano emerge de la oscuridad con las ideas más claras: la solución del caso le ronda las narices, así que sólo es cuestión de paciencia y método, para lo cual nada mejor que relajarse antes con algún manjar preparado por Adelina, su fiel asistenta.

Tutto inizia con un cellulare spento. A telefonare è Ester, a non rispondere è Giulio, finito in ospedale a causa di un brutto tamponamento sulla via Aurelia. A riaccendere il telefonino, invece, è Giuditta, la moglie di Giulio, che ovviamente di Ester non sa nulla. Potrebbe essere l'inizio di una commedia rosa, ma il colore di questa storia è decisamente un altro: un testimone, infatti, sostiene che quello di Giulio non sia stato un incidente, ma un tentato omicidio, e la pratica passa dagli uffici dell'assicurazione a quelli del commissariato.

Una joven hermosa, mujer de un médico boloñés, aparece muerta en el chalet de ambos. Pocas pertenencias la acompañaban en la escena del crimen, aparte de un misterioso violín guardado en su estuche. Su bolsa de joyas se ha esfumado y todas las miradas se centran en un pariente desequilibrado que ha desaparecido la misma noche del crimen. Montalbano, con su parsimonia habitual, inicia la investigación. No cree a nadie, no se fía de nadie. Tras la muerte de un sospechoso, sus superioresdan por cerrado el caso, pero él, ni hablar.

Tanti incontri qui offerti nella forma del racconto, ognuno dei quali ha una luce, un'atmosfera e dei personaggi indimenticabili che hanno segnato soprattutto la giovinezza e l'adolescenza di Camilleri. Alcuni conosciuti negli anni più maturi, durante la sua carriera di regista teatrale e televisivo, molti altri sconosciuti, che ci riportano ai tempi del fascismo, della guerra.
