Příběh maďarského revolucionáře Sandorfa začíná v Terstu, kde tři maďarští vlastenci připravují povstání. Dojde však k jeho prozrazení, dva vůdcové zahynou, uprchnout se podaří jen Matyáši Sandorfovi. Po patnácti letech se objevuje jako doktor Antekirt a vydává se po stopě udavačů, které hodlá náležitě potrestat. Román je poctou dílu Hrabě Monte Christo Alexandra Dumase staršího, kterého Verne považoval za svůj vzor a svoji knihu mu i věnoval. Podobně jako hrabě z původního díla je i doktor Antekirt velmi bohatý, což mu slouží k dosažení pomsty.

Budeme svědky napínavého příběhu odehrávajícího se v Indii roku 1867. Inženýr Banks pozve plukovníka Munroa, kapitána Hooda a Francouze Mauclera na výpravu po severních částech Indie. Jako dopravní prostředek jim má sloužit obrovský ocelový slon poháněný parním strojem, původně vyrobený pro bohatého rádžu. Verne líčí v románu nejen zeměpisné a přírodní zajímavosti, ale je tu i dobrodružná zápletka – plukovník Munroe hodlá pomstít smrt své ženy.
