En este poema alegórico Dante Alighieri muestra un proceso de perfección para alcanzar la felicidad humana y divina. La obra consta de tres partes: Infierno, Purgatorio y Paraíso. Para llegar a éste último es preciso seguir un camino que obliga a pasar por un rechazo del pecado (infierno) y purificación del arrepentimiento (purgatorio) que permitan llegar a la felicidad humana y religiosa (paraíso).

The Divine Comedy (Italian: Divina Commedia) is an Italian narrative poem by Dante Alighieri, begun c. 1308 and completed in 1320, a year before his death in 1321. It is widely considered the pre-eminent work in Italian literature and one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval worldview as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It helped establish the Tuscan language, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. It is divided into three parts.

Inferno follows Dante through hell, with only an roman poet named Virgil to guide him. Dante loses his way in a forest and stumbles across Hell; but Virgil tells him that if he ventures through hell he can reach Heaven where his beloved awaits....

Paradiso gives our imagination a hint of the beauty to come, by uncovering the deepest reality of the life we are living now. God is the same, eternity past to eternity future; He is the same God today. It is an allegory telling of the climb of Dante up the Mount of Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil, except for the last four cantos at which point Beatrice takes over as Dante's guide.

Led by his guide Beatrice, Dante leaves the Earth behind and soars through the heavenly spheres of Paradise.
